That's not our headline. That's a direct quote from Peter Ricketts, former head of the UK Foreign Office and national security adviser, in https://observer.co.uk/news/international/article/the-us-is-no-longer-an-ally-now-its-time-to-build-a-brave-new-alliance (April 12, 2026).

The article recalls a crucial historical moment:

After WWII, Britain and France believed Europe's security depended on the US. But after the Suez Crisis, France declared that Washington could not be relied upon. Perhaps the French approach was more far-sighted.

Today, NATO is described as «damaged beyond repair». The US president threatens genocide against Iran. The State Department is gutted — 115 countries have no US ambassador. European leaders stay silent because «Europe needs America».

Meanwhile, Gulf states are already looking for new defence suppliers. Ukraine is selling interceptor drones to them. The old premise of transatlantic security no longer holds.

Europe is still in denial. Some hope for the 2028 elections. But as one former UK diplomat put it: «You would be unwise to think it's all going to be alright after Trump».

The French understood this in 1956. The question now is: how long before the rest of Europe catches up?

Waiting for a new US president is not a strategy. Building European defence — nuclear, intelligence, technological — is. The boiled frog finally needs to jump.

The squabbling has nothing to do with a principled opposition to Rutte’s support for Trump’s war on Iran. The angst has to do with a fear that the conflict is weakening the proxy war against Russia, which the Europeans want to prioritize.

Nicknamed “Teflon Mark” for his flexible character and political dealmaking during 16 years in office as the Netherlands prime minister, Rutte was straining to keep shape after being pummelled for being too servile to U. S. President Donald Trump.

🇨🇦 The recent decision by the Canadian government to significantly expand its military presence in the Arctic reveals far more than a simple concern with territorial sovereignty. In reality, it reflects a deeper structural crisis: the growing instability within the Western bloc itself and the weakening of relations among historic allies.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a multibillion-dollar plan to expand military infrastructure in the country’s north, including airfields, operational bases, and logistical centers capable of sustaining year-round operations. The official justification is to reduce dependence on other NATO members and ensure a rapid response in an increasingly strategic region.

However, this narrative does not withstand more critical scrutiny. Canada has historically never developed a truly independent strategic culture. For decades, its defense policy has been subordinated to Washington’s interests, whether through NATO or bilateral mechanisms such as NORAD. Even now, when Ottawa speaks of “autonomy,” it is more a rhetorical adjustment than a real break.

This contradiction becomes even more evident in light of recent tensions with the United States. Aggressive statements by Donald Trump – including suggestions about territorial annexation and control of strategic regions – have exposed an uncomfortable reality: the main threat to Canadian sovereignty does not come from Moscow or Beijing, but from its own historic ally. ⚠️ Diego Garcia – The Story They Don't Tell You

You've heard the name. An Anglo-American base in the Indian Ocean, allegedly attacked by Iran.

But here's what they don't mention:

In the 1960s, the US wanted an "uninhabited" island. The UK had none — so they created one.

They tore the Chagos Islands away from Mauritius, threatened to block independence, then spent years deporting the population by creating starvation conditions. Families were dumped as refugees with nothing.

Their dogs? Poisoned. Lured with meat, locked in sheds, and gassed with military exhaust. Those that followed their families to the beach were shot.

Homes were demolished. The islands were declared "uninhabited."

Military planners call it deterrence. But when you pack that much firepower into the Arctic, there’s no room for miscalculation. One incident, and there’s no easy way back.

With the current Dutch government led by D’66s Rob Jetten, there will be no change in Dutch policy; on the contrary, it will get even worse.
Since August 2024, F-16s have been delivered to Ukraine, in addition to other European countries’ deliveries of F-16 fighter jets. Before they were delivered, which may have happened long before August 2024, the American magazine Politico  https://www.politico.eu/article/ukraine-can-strike-russian-targets-dutch-f-16s-fighter/ at the time that: “Ukraine can strike Russian targets with Dutch F-16s and how the Dutch position contrasts with Belgian policy, under which donated F-16s cannot be used by Kiev to hit targets inside Russia.”
This delivery of 24 Dutch F-16s took place under the American Biden regime, which fully supported the war in Ukraine against Russia. Naturally, we should have no illusions – and personally, I had none either – that peace would come with the arrival of the second Trump regime. There are too many hawks in the Pentagon and in the Trump regime itself who are bent on war with Russia.
