Distance Creates Reverence, Familiarity Reduces it

Sheikh 'Abdulkarim Al-Khudhair hafidhahullah said:

There is a statement from the scholars, and it has a share of truth in reality. They said:
“The people who are most detached from (or least interested in) a scholar are his family and his neighbours.”

This can be observed. You find that a great scholar—his children, if they have goodness, eagerness, and a desire for knowledge—attend the lessons of other scholars. This is undoubtedly good, but you still find them somewhat detached from their own father.

So, the people most detached from a scholar are his family and neighbours. Perhaps the reason for that is that reverence, respect, and esteem in people’s hearts are tied to complete formality and decorum.

When you see a scholar from a distance, you find him dignified—generally composed, properly dressed, and perhaps wearing a cloak. But the father, you see him in states where some formality is lacking; sometimes he may not even be properly dressed while among his children and wives. In such a situation, there is no doubt that his awe in their hearts decreases.

Also, frequent contact—his constant presence among them at all times—and their seeing his behaviour, which is human, and human behaviour inevitably has shortcomings. When family members and children observe this, his standing in their eyes drops, so they turn to others.

Whereas other scholars are consistently seen in a state of formality, never appearing otherwise, so you find people becoming more attached to them than to their own father or brother who is a scholar.

Good Character Begins at Home

Sheikh Sulayman Ar-Ruhayli hafidhahullah said:

If you train yourself to adopt a certain good character, you’ll find that after some time it becomes natural to you. There is no good trait that you cannot develop. But you should seek help from Allah and strive for it.

Some people say, “I’m just an angry person, that’s how I am.” But that’s not true—you can train yourself. Force it upon yourself, especially with your family, because the hardest place to show good character is with your family.

That is why many people struggle to behave well inside their homes. As some say: outside the home they are like honey, but inside they are like onions. Outside, they smile and speak kindly—“my dear, my brother”—but if someone wrongs them, they stay calm and say, “May Allah pardon you.” Yet the moment they enter their home and see a mistake, they react harshly, “Your mother this...your father that...”—because they don’t feel the need to hold themselves back.

So one of the best places to train yourself in good character is at home. If you can truly maintain good character at home, then you can be certain you will maintain it outside your home as well.

The Three Types of Friends

Sheikh Uthaymin rahimahullah said:

As for friends, they can be divided into three types:

1⃣. A friend of benefit:
This is someone who is your friend only as long as they gain something from you—whether money, status, or anything else. Once the benefit stops, they become like an enemy; they no longer know you, and you no longer know them.

2⃣. A friend of pleasure:
This person is only your friend because they enjoy sitting with you—talking, chatting, and passing time together. But they do not benefit you, and you do not benefit them. Neither of you helps the other. It is nothing but wasted time, so be careful not to let this kind of friend waste your time.

3⃣. A friend of virtue:
This is someone who encourages you to do what is good and stops you from what is wrong. They open doors of goodness for you and guide you to it. If you make a mistake, they correct you in a way that does not hurt your dignity. This is the true friend of virtue.

Strength Comes Through Humility Before Allah

Sheikh Salih Aal Ash-Sheikh hafidhahullah said:

You become stronger through humility before Allah. Your strength comes from humility—not from saying “I” and “me.” No, your strength is in being humble.

Your strongest state is when you are humble, prostrating. A person is at their strongest, if one truly understands, when in prostration. This forehead, when it is on the ground, is actually the strongest position a person can be in.

Someone focused only on material life might look at this and think, “What is this?” But in reality, this is your strongest state—when you are at your closest.

That is why the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The closest a servant is to his Lord is when he is prostrating.” Because in that moment, a person expresses their humility, their submission, and says, “I am Your servant, O Lord.”

A: Yes, there is enjoyment in the grave for those who deserve it. The proof is that the Prophet ﷺ said: “It will be said: Dress him with clothes from Paradise and open for him a door to Paradise.”
