Warning and Clarification in Exposing the Leaders of Misguidance
The first head of falsehood to appear in this الأمة (nation), and the first “horn” of misguidance to emerge, is the one from whom the sect of the Khawārij originated.
He appeared during the time of the Prophet ((ﷺ) who ordered that he be killed but he was not killed, out of wisdom from Allah, the Exalted. From him the Khawārij arose, and they will continue until the end of time.
It is reported by Aḥmad and al-Ṭabarānī from the ḥadīth of Abu Bakrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah(( ﷺ)) passed by a man who was in prostration.
He said:⤵️
“Who will kill this man?” One of the Companions stood up, rolled up his sleeves, unsheathed his sword, and shook it, intending to kill him.
Then he said: “O Messenger of Allaah, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you this is Abu Bakr (may Allaah be pleased with him) how can I kill a man who is prostrating and testifying that there is no god but Allaah and that Muḥammad is His servant and Messenger?”
So he refrained.
Then the Prophet ((ﷺ)) said again: ↩️
“Who will kill this man?” Another Companion stood identified in another narration as Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and did as Abu Bakr had done, and said the same. In another narration, Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allaah be pleased with him) stood the third time, and the Prophet ((ﷺ ))said: ⤵️
“You are the one for it, but you will not reach him you will not reach him,” meaning he would not catch him after he had gone.
In some narrations, the Prophet ((ﷺ ))said: ⤵️
“If you had killed him, it would have been the first and the last trial (fitnah).
If this man had been killed, there would have been no disagreement, no division, no خروج (rebellion), and no تكفير (excommunication).” In another narration, he said: “This is the first horn to emerge in this الأمة; if you had killed him, no two people would have differed.”
However, this particular narration includes narrators such as Yazīd al-Raqāshī and Mūsā ibn ʿUbaydah al-Rabadhī, both of whom are weak.
A report in Aḥmad from the ḥadīth of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allaah be pleased with him), with a chain graded ḥasan by al-Albānī, states that Abu Bakr saw a man who appeared humble and of good outward appearance praying, and he mentioned him to the Messenger of Allaah ((ﷺ.)
The Prophet ((ﷺ ))said:⤵️
“Kill him.” Abu Bakr intended to do so but disliked killing him.
Then the Prophet ((ﷺ ))told ʿUmar to kill him, but he also disliked it.
Then he said to ʿAlī: “Kill him.” ʿAlī went to do so but did not find him.
This indicates that ʿAlī (may Allaah be pleased with him) would be the one to fight and kill the Khawārij, and that this would occur during his time.
Then the Prophet ((ﷺ ))said about this man: ⤵️
“Indeed, this man and his companions will recite the Qur’an but it will not go beyond their throats.
Kill them, for they are the worst of creation.”
This is from the ḥadīth of Abu Saʿīd in Musnad Aḥmad.
The question remains: ↩️
is this man Dhul-Khuwaysirah al-Tamimi himself, or someone else? Or did Dhul-Khuwaysirah take misguidance from him? Allah knows best. What appears most likely is that he is the same person, because the descriptions mentioned here are also reported regarding Dhul-Khuwaysirah.
In the authentic collections (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim), it is reported that this man Dhul-Khuwaysirah said:
“O Muḥammad, be just!” The Prophet ((ﷺ ))replied: “Woe to you! Who would be just if I am not just?”
Then ʿUmar (may Allaah be pleased with him) stood and said: “Allow me to strike his neck, O Messenger of Allaah.”
