The painting shows Elizaveta Mikhailovna Martynova (1868–1905), an artist and close friend of Somov. She entered the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1890, when women were newly allowed formal training.

Martynova stands close to the front, yet her distant gaze, pale skin, and cool blue dress create an aloof presence. Her hand at her chest forms the composition's center and a subtle barrier. The lace-trimmed blue muslin gown suggests an earlier era, emphasizing female fragility. In contrast, her hairstyle is simple.

CRITICAL: The Garage Museum team has created a free family app — the first Russian dictionary of contemporary art terms in Russian Sign Language designed specifically for children.

"Garage Museum in RSL: For Kids" is an educational app with videos and illustrations that helps children (on their own or with adults) learn more about Garage Museum and the art world at large.

The app’s playful design makes learning engaging and fun, while its intuitive interface allows kids to explore independently. The “Mini Dictionary” section features five virtual rooms — from a picture gallery to an art study — each filled with objects. Tapping on an object opens a video in Russian Sign Language with Russian subtitles, showing the sign for the object and explaining its meaning.

Each term is presented through short clips in which deaf children explain art concepts to their peers using sign language. All videos are supported by interactive illustrations. The first version includes 24 terms, with more to be added and updated regularly.

The app is free and available on iOS.
