A man's son came home crying - his teacher had hit him. In his anger, the father fabricated a ḥadīth on the spot, attributing it to the Prophet ﷺ, condemning teachers as "the worst of people."

This is not a hypothetical. It is a documented incident from the books of ḥadīth criticism - and it illustrates precisely why the science of mawḍūʿāt (fabricated narrations) exists, and why the muḥaddithūn dedicated their lives to mastering it.

The following article explores this fascinating and essential field. Here are the key takeaways:

1. Scholars narrated fabricated ḥadīths intentionally - and for good reason. Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal himself wrote from known liars, not out of negligence, but to identify their fabrications and protect the Sunnah. As he put it: "So that we may recognise him."

2. There are clear signs that expose a fabricated ḥadīth. These range from a narrator's own confession, to historical inaccuracies, to the ḥadīth itself - poor Arabic, absurd content, or promises of enormous rewards for trivial deeds. Imām Ibn al-Qayyim even noted that some fabrications are too silly to be the words of the Prophet ﷺ.

3. Even specialist books on mawḍūʿāt must be used with caution. Imām Ibn al-Jawzī's famous Kitāb al-Mawḍūʿāt contains narrations that later scholars graded as Ḥasan or even Ṣaḥīḥ. Imām Ibn Ḥajar himself called for a thorough revision of the work - a reminder that this science demands depth, not shortcuts.

In an age where a fatwa is a Google search away and entire "courses" are consumed through a screen without a teacher in sight - it's worth pausing and asking: is this really how 'ilm is meant to be carried?

Mufti Muhammad ibn Adam al-Kawthari addresses exactly this in one of our most important pieces on the site, and we wanted to make sure it hadn't passed you by.

1. Isnad is not a formality - it's part of the deen itself. Ibn al-Mubarak said it plainly: without isnad, anyone could say whatever they wished. The chain of transmission is what separates authenticated knowledge from mere opinion.

Every student of knowledge begins with an intention. But how often do we pause - mid-semester, mid-kitāb, mid-career - to ask whether that intention has remained pure?

Shaykh Muḥammad ʿAwwāmah's Maʿālim Irshādiyyah is one of those rare books that holds up a mirror to the seeker. Here are a few that stayed with us:

1. Your intention should be Allāh - in everything. Not just in your learning, but in your commute to class, your choice of teacher, and even the books you buy. The Shaykh reminds us: choose a teacher whose very presence reminds you of Allāh.

2. Not all knowledge is beneficial - and the trap is subtle. Imām Dhahabī warned of this centuries ago. A student can spend years accumulating knowledge that does nothing for his ākhirah, or worse, becomes a means of arrogance. The time to check yourself is before the years slip by.

3. Gatherings of knowledge are not ordinary. Imām Aḥmad called the students of Ḥadīth who came with their inkpots "the lanterns of Islām." A narration in Dārimī speaks of Jibrīl (as) himself being present in a ḥalaqah of knowledge. These are not spaces to take lightly.

On the 9th of Shawwāl, just before Fajr, the great scholar of ḥadīth, Shaykh ʿAbdul Fattāḥ Abū Ghuddah (raḥimahullāh), returned to his Lord. His passing is a reminder that lives dedicated to knowledge and sincerity leave behind a legacy far greater than the years they lived.

Born in Aleppo in 1917, he devoted his life to seeking and teaching sacred knowledge. He studied under some of the greatest scholars of his time, including Shaykh Muḥammad Zāhid al-Kawtharī, and became a leading authority in the science of ḥadīth. His works are still regarded as deeply insightful and authoritative, benefiting students across generations.

Beyond his knowledge, he was known for his character, humility, and tireless efforts in spreading the dīn. He travelled, taught, and served the ummah with sincerity, leaving an impact that continues long after his passing.

May Allah have mercy on him, elevate his rank, and grant him al-Firdaws. Āmīn Yā Rabb.

It was truly uplifting to see the stall consistently busy throughout the day — with so many sisters, young people, and families stopping by, engaging, asking questions, and reflecting. There was a real sense of warmth and sincerity, and it was a joy to witness so many people actively seeking to strengthen their relationship with the Qur’an.

From conversations to reflections, and from resources to small moments of inspiration — it was a day filled with benefit, connection, and barakah.

Adab of teachers remains the same - whether online or offline.

As technology develops, the method of learning and teachings have also taken a change - we now have many students who choose to study online.

The question then arises, what would their Adab be? It is quiet simple.

To put it into one sentence; "Whatever rules of Adab apply in a physical classroom also applies in your virtual classroom, although its application may be different to one another."

Remember, showing Adab towards a teacher is not for the benefit of the teacher rather it is for your ownselves, therefore the same applies for when studying online.

The Adab can be reflected by how you speak to the teacher (via text, e-mail etc), to how puntually you attend the sessions online, except excused.

A student should also keep in mind that the Adab for what one studies remains the same, you're studying the Qur'ān and Ḥadīth, therefore out of respect for this one should create an enviroment of studying.

The three aspects of Adab are still practically do-able when studying online:

- Iṭāʿah; obedience of the teacher in what they require you to do.

- Khidmah; service to one's teacher by overing your services, albeit remotely.

- Azmat; having awe and reverance for one's teacher, in order to take maximum benefit for him/her.

Muḥāsabah refers to the honest self- reflection before the Day when every deed will be weighed. It is not about despairing over past mistakes, but about recognising them, correcting them, and striving to improve. Our time is limited, and how we use it determines what we will stand with before Allah.

A practical way to do this is by reviewing the foundations of our faith. Are our five daily prayers performed on time, with focus, or rushed? We should also examine our speech - do our words uplift others or harm them? Then reflect on the “heart-thieves”: habits and distractions that pull us away from the Qur’an and dhikr, such as constant distractions or attachment to the dunya.

Most importantly, every shortcoming should be followed with sincere tawbah. Saying Astaghfirullah with a genuine heart renews the soul. Self-accountability today is a mercy - it allows us to fix what we can before the Day when accounts are final.
