Iran’s stock market is set to reopen today after remaining closed for nearly 80 days amid the ongoing geopolitical conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the US.

The market had been shut since the escalation of tensions primarily to:
• Prevent panic selling
• Protect shareholder wealth
• Avoid disorderly price discovery during extreme wartime volatility

This is not unusual during periods of heightened geopolitical uncertainty, where investor sentiment can swing sharply within a very short time.

Now, as the market prepares to reopen with extended trading hours, volatility is still expected.

Historically, similar reopenings after prolonged closures have witnessed immediate corrections of 7–8% due to accumulated panic and uncertainty.

The last major profit cycle was helped by higher borrowing. This cycle appears different: large Indian companies have achieved improved returns while carrying significantly less debt.

That means future growth does not need to start from a stretched financial position. With cleaner books, stronger cash flows, and room to selectively fund capex, the next leg of earnings improvement could come from disciplined re-leveraging, not reckless borrowing.
The key trigger remains demand. If it revives, today’s market multiples may deserve a more constructive interpretation.
