🕋 When the Journey Is Beyond Your Reach, Let Your Heart Still Travel
✍️ Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali رحمه الله said:
“Whoever is not able to stop at ‘Arafah, then stop at the limits of Allâh He has set.
Whoever is not able to spend the night at Muzdalifah, let him spend the night in obedience to Allâh to come close and attain nearness to Him.
Whoever is not able to slaughter at Minā, then let him slaughter his desires.
Whoever cannot make it to the Ka‘bah and is far from it, then let him serve the Lord of the Ka‘bah, for He is nearer than the jugular vein.”
📘 Laṭā’if al-Ma‘ārif, p. 633.
✏️ *Explanation:*
If You Cannot Reach the Sacred Places, Then Let Your Heart Reach Allâh ﷻ
✍️ Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali رحمه الله beautifully reminds us that the worship of Allâh ﷻ is not restricted to places, crowds, or journeys. The doors of nearness to Allâh ﷻ remain open for every servant — whether they stand on the plains of ‘Arafah or remain in the quietness of their homes.
Many hearts long to witness the pilgrims clothed in white, to stand at ‘Arafah with tears flowing, to walk through Minā and Muzdalifah, and to gaze upon the Ka‘bah. Yet not every believer is granted that opportunity. Some are restrained by health, wealth, responsibilities, or circumstances known only to Allâh ﷻ. But the mercy of Allâh ﷻ is vast, and His generosity is not limited to geography.
If you cannot stand at ‘Arafah, then stand firmly within the boundaries Allâh ﷻ has set. Guard your prayers, lower your gaze, protect your tongue, and abandon sins that distance the heart from its Lord. Perhaps a servant who never travelled to Makkah becomes more beloved to Allâh ﷻ through sincere obedience hidden from the eyes of people.
If you cannot spend the night in Muzdalifah, then spend your nights in worship, du‘ā, repentance, and remembrance. A heart awake in obedience may ascend to heights unreachable by the feet alone.
If you cannot offer a sacrifice in Minā, then sacrifice the desires that enslave the soul — pride, envy, arrogance, heedlessness, and attachment to dunya. Slaughtering one’s desires for the sake of Allâh ﷻ is among the greatest forms of devotion.
And if you are far from the Ka‘bah, then remember the Lord of the Ka‘bah is never far from you.
Allâh ﷻ says:
﴿وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ حَبْلِ الْوَرِيدِ﴾
“And We are closer to him than his jugular vein.”
~ [Surah Qāf 50:16]
This statement fills the believer with hope: your distance from Makkah does not mean distance from Allâh ﷻ. Nearness to Allâh ﷻ is attained through sincerity, humility, repentance, and obedience.
So let these blessed days not pass you by in sadness over what you could not do. Rather, fill them with what you still can do — dhikr, Qur’ān, fasting, charity, du‘ā, repentance, and hidden acts of righteousness known only to Allâh ﷻ.
Perhaps a tear shed in your room, a sincere du‘ā in the last third of the night, or a heart that sacrifices its desires for Allâh ﷻ may raise you among the ranks of those accepted by Him.
