Requirement for Degree and Transcript Processing (For Residency or seeking original degree currently)

Completion of 7 years of service—or payment in lieu of the remaining service years—is currently required to obtain your original degree or to request the release of an official transcript. This creates a significant challenge for many graduates.

Current Situation

This issue was reported previously in certain regions of Ethiopia, particularly in Dire Dawa. At present, it appears to be a nationwide concern.

Key Points

Original Degree:

Obtaining the original degree requires settling the service obligation financially. At this time, there is no alternative pathway.

Official Transcript:

There is still a workable process to obtain transcripts without completing or paying for all service years:

A. Visit your residency university.

B. The residency institution will prepare an official letter addressed to your undergraduate university, confirming your enrollment in residency and formally requesting the release of your transcript.

C. Depending on institutional practice:

✍️ The residency university may send the request directly, or

✍️ Provide you with a hard copy, which you will forward via post.

D. A legally authorized representative (delegate) at your undergraduate university can complete the processing on your behalf.

Advisory
This issue, while important, should not discourage you from pursuing residency training.

Recommendation
Previously, it was possible to obtain the original degree after 3–4 years of service; however, policies continue to evolve and may become more restrictive over time.

If feasible, securing your original degree early is strongly advisable—particularly for those planning to pursue international opportunities such as scholarships or licensing exams (e.g., USMLE).

ኬንያ  ለሐኪሞቿ ከፍተኛ ደመወዝ በመክፈል ከአፍሪካ ቀዳሚ ከሆኑ ሀገራት መካከል አንዷ ሆና ተመዝግባለች። በኬንያ የሚገኙ የሕክምና ባለሙያዎች በዓመት ከ1.7 ሚሊዮን እስከ 6 ሚሊዮን የኬንያ ሽልንግ (ከ13,000 እስከ 46,000 የአሜሪካ ዶላር) ያገኛሉ። ይህም ሀገሪቱ ለጤና ባለሙያዎቿ የምትሰጠውን ትኩረትና በዘርፉ ያለውን ከፍተኛ የክፍያ ስኬት ያሳያል።

በሙያው ገና ለሚጀምሩ ጀማሪ ሐኪሞች  የሚከፈለው ዓመታዊ ገቢ ከ1.2 ሚሊዮን እስከ 2.1 ሚሊዮን የኬንያ ሽልንግ የሚደርስ ሲሆን፣ ይህም ለጀማሪ ባለሙያዎች ምቹ የሥራ አካባቢን ይፈጥራል።

ከፍተኛ ልምድ ያላቸው ስፔሻሊስት ሐኪሞች ደግሞ በወር ከ750,000 የኬንያ ሽልንግ በላይ ሊያገኙ ይችላሉ። ይህም ከመደበኛ ደመወዝ በተጨማሪ ልዩ ልዩ አበልዎችንና የግል ሕክምና ሥራዎችን ጨምሮ ጠቅላላ ዓመታዊ ገቢያቸው ከ9 ሚሊዮን የኬንያ ሽልንግ በላይ እንዲያሻቅብ ያደርገዋል። ይህ ከፍተኛ የክፍያ ሥርዓት ኬንያ የሕክምና ባለሙያዎቿ ወደ ውጭ ሀገር እንዳይሰደዱ ለመከላከል ካደረገችው ጥረት ጋር የተያያዘ ነው።

Tinsley Randolph Harrison (March 18, 1900 – August 4, 1978) was an American physician, cardiologist, and medical educator. He achieved international recognition as founding editor of Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine, one of the world’s most influential medical texts, and as a leader in 20th-century medical education.
