With immense pride and deep respect, we honor Dr. Yemane Ayele, one of the most distinguished pioneers of anesthesiology in Ethiopia. His remarkable legacy stands as a shining example of dedication, visionary leadership, and unwavering commitment to advancing safe surgical and critical care services in our country.
The history of physician anesthesiology in Ethiopia reached a historic milestone in 1990, when the first residency training program in anesthesiology was established at Addis Ababa University under the leadership of Dr. Keith Streatfield, an Australian anesthesiologist who played a foundational role in establishing the Department of Anesthesiology. Prior to this milestone, anesthesia services in Ethiopia were provided entirely by expatriate anesthetists.
From this pioneering era emerged one of Ethiopia’s most respected physician anesthesiologists—Dr. Yemane Ayele. As one of the earliest Ethiopian anesthesiology specialists, he courageously served in the periphery at a time when the specialty was extremely scarce & at one point he stood as the only anesthesiologist serving in the periphery, ensuring that life-saving surgical care remained possible for thousands of patients.
Together with other visionary anesthesiologists, surgeons, and internists, Dr. Yemane helped establish the earliest intensive care services in Ethiopia during the early 1990s, laying the foundation for modern critical care in the country.
Dr. Yemane later founded the Department of Anesthesia at Jimma University & led the department with exceptional dedication and strategic vision for many years. Under his stewardship, the department grew into a strong academic and clinical hub, training generations of anesthesiology professionals & contributing significantly to Ethiopia’s healthcare system.
His impact extends far beyond national borders. Dr. Yemane proudly represented Ethiopian anesthesiology on the global stage, participating in major international scientific gatherings including the 2008 World Congress of Anaesthesiology in Cape Town, South Africa, which is the first congress in African land; the 2012 World Congress of Anaesthesiology in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and the American Society of Anesthesiologists Annual Meeting in Washington, DC in 2012. Through these engagements, he actively contributed to global knowledge exchange and strengthened Ethiopia’s presence in the international anesthesia community.
In addition to his academic and clinical leadership, Dr. Yemane has served humanity through volunteer surgical missions with Operation Smile, providing anesthesia care for children and patients in need across several countries. He also served Jimma University as Vice Medical Director, demonstrating outstanding leadership in healthcare administration and service delivery.
In recognition of his extraordinary service to patients and communities in underserved areas, Dr. Yemane Ayele was honored in 2024 by the Ethiopian Medical Association as the Best Physician Serving at branch level—a prestigious acknowledgment of his lifelong dedication, resilience, and compassionate care for those who need it most.
Even today, this inspiring leader continues to practice anesthesiology at Jimma University, embodying a lifetime of commitment to patient care, mentorship, and professional excellence.
Now, tragically, we are in the darkest era for anesthesiology in Ethiopia. The profession is on the verge of extinction due to devastating administrative and policy failures. New resident enrollment has collapsed by over 80% compared to previous years. Therefore, urgent, non-negotiable calls to action for the Ethiopian Society of Anesthesiologists Professional Association & MoH is to rescue this noble profession from oblivion—just as developed nations have valiantly done.
Today we celebrate not only a physician, but a towering figure in Ethiopian medicine—a trailblazer, mentor, institution builder & guardian of safe surgical care.
Thank you, Dr. Yemane Ayele, for your extraordinary service and enduring legacy.
Dr. Getahun Geremew, ACCPM
