Exempt items (under $100 per item)
Clothing and Footwear: Most everyday clothing and footwear are exempt, including items like jeans, shirts, dresses, sneakers, casual athletic wear, and school/work uniforms. Cloth and disposable fabric face masks are also included.
Backpacks: Student backpacks, including those with wheels and messenger bags, are exempt, with a limit of 10 per purchase unless for school use.
School Supplies: A wide range of school supplies are exempt. These include binders, chalk, calculators, tape, compasses, composition books, crayons, erasers, folders, glue, highlighters, index cards, legal pads, lunch boxes, markers, notebooks, various types of paper, pencil boxes and sharpeners, pencils, pens, protractors, rulers, scissors, and writing tablets. Kits are exempt if the tax-exempt items within them are more valuable than the taxable ones.

Each item must cost less than $100 to be tax-exempt.
Shipping and handling are included in the price when determining if an item qualifies.
Purchases made in-store, online, by mail, or phone during the holiday are eligible.
Diapers are always exempt from sales tax in Texas.

Jewelry, watches, handbags, purses, wallets, umbrellas, luggage, and computer bags.
Athletic gear and specialized clothing/footwear primarily designed for athletic or protective use.
Framed backpacks.
Items used to make or repair clothing.
Non-prescription sunglasses.
