Especially now, when fpvs can lock down rotations for 50 days or more, it is probably time to add some basic sustainment gear to your kit. So you do not end up scraping dew off leaves like this guy.

A pocket water filter should be high on that list, ideally one that screws onto a regular plastic bottle. It is also worth learning a few ugly water tricks. Tie a piece of cloth around your boot, walk through tall wet grass, then wring it out. Still better than shaking branches into a small cup.

By the way, until recently I was pretty sure the only standard issue 3rd Assault Brigade gear with marks was body armor plus some clothing pieces.

But recently I got my hands on something unique I honestly didn’t even know existed.

This endless obsession with lessons from Ukraine is basically irrelevant to a modern Western army with a real air force, the kind that can shut down drone teams. By that logic, NATO should be studying African armies too. Some of them have been at war for decades.

US soldier needs laser-cut gear because every 40 grams matters to a real professional. American doctrine is not built around digging in and slow advances. It is built around fast maneuver warfare, so obviously everything will go exactly that way.

Russian recon backpack with built-in 3D camo

Sewing extra row of MOLLE onto your TQ pouch, grenade pouch or even a mag pouch is honestly pretty dumb. Be real, how often do you actually see people using those outer MOLLE?

Replace them with laser-cut 3D camo and suddenly that space becomes way more useful.

Interesting to watch the global battlefield enter its third loop

The first came when Ukraine showed that drones had changed the threat model for almost every vehicle and unit. The West rushed to declare that everything we knew was obsolete. That was exaggerated, but not by much

The second came when people with no practical experience started saying this was only happening because Ukraine had no real air force; A modern Western-style military would not ended up in a drone-dominated war; Air dominance is a spectrum, if you lack it in one place, build it somewhere else; Total loss of air dominance is impossible

That is not wrong. But it still leads to the wrong conclusion: drones did not permanently change war

Now we are in the third loop. Inexperienced arabs, without industrial-scale FPV production, are causing real losses where they once could not even get close

Against 🇮🇱 / 🇺🇸 / 🇷🇺’s Africa Corp, where the big guys has modern high-altitude drones and absolutely uncontested air dominance

I once heard that after combat, traffic accidents were the second biggest killer of soldiers.

At the time, I didn’t think much of it. Then our forces took Izium and within five days, people I knew were dead in a crash (no drone chasing them). Just the habit of driving fast and moving without headlights, suddenly carried onto public roads.

Burns made up only 2.9% of all Ukrainian combat wounds in 2025, according to the medical service stats. But for vehicle crews, that number is probably higher. Which raises a fair question: does the MARCH algorithm really fit every military role equally well? If the order of treatment is based on how fast a casualty is likely to die, then troops facing different threats may need different algorithms? In winter, hypothermia probably kills at least as many wounded as pneumothorax.

I'm speaking from an infantry perspective and meant a standard IFAK used.

Any time gear gets discussed, someone will say that paying extra for real multicam / IRR / no-melt-no-drip / flame-resistant is just tacticool. These are the same people who laughed at hand-to-hand combat (statistically impossible!), at 3D camouflage (thermal sees everything anyway!) and at groin protection adding extra weight (the weight of one AK mag). But war against a capable enemy suddenly brought everyone back to reality.

I’ve built up a decent collection of cases that once felt rare, but have become almost routine by now. Drones with shotguns. People tangled in fiber optic wire. Even hand-to-hand combat. But I never thought the “suicides by knife” folder would end up with six videos. Hell.

A solid example of Russian soldiers countering an FPV drone with shotguns and smoke grenades.

Smoke in defensive use rarely gets discussed. Most of the time it’s only mentioned in bunker assaults, or occasionally with artillery.

Against a non fiber optic FPV drone, where the video quality is already limited, smoke can make targeting much harder.

This is how badly wounds and exhaustion can complicate applying a tourniquet even after you pull it out.

Imagine a guy with fully loaded cummerbunds, who keeps his TQ in a flapped pouch on his lower back and proudly shows how fast he can grab it (rested, uninjured and not stuck in a wrecked vehicle / tight trench).
