When you sit down to work and can’t focus, it’s usually not a discipline problem. It’s a cognitive load problem: your mental RAM is maxed out by all the unfinished tasks and half-remembered worries you’re trying to juggle at once.

Psychologist John Sweller’s work on cognitive load theory shows that working memory can only hold a few chunks of information at a time; when you exceed that, performance collapses, just like a computer running too many programs. At the same time, your brain’s “planning” network and “focus” network start firing together instead of taking turns, creating mental traffic instead of flow.

High performers solve this by aggressively offloading what’s in their head. The simplest move: a Cognitive Load Dump. Grab a physical sheet of paper and write down everything on your mind—tasks, worries, random thoughts, conversations you need to have. Don’t organize, just empty.

Then, for each item, make a fast decision:

Do it now (if it takes under 2 minutes)
Schedule it (put it on your calendar)
Delete it (cross it out)
Delegate it (assign it to someone)

Finally, fold the page, put it out
of sight, and take three slow breaths (inhale 3, hold 2, exhale 10) to signal to your nervous system that things are handled.

Treat this like a deep clean for your mind, then keep your load low by following three rules: never store to‑dos in your head, close open loops quickly, and rely on systems—not memory—for remembering.

Productivity isn’t about cramming more into your brain. It’s about creating an unburdened mind that can give full, relaxed attention to one important thing at a time.
