Carl von Clausewitz developed the idea of the “fog of war” while studying the Napoleonic Wars.

Even Napoleon’s armies fought with incomplete information.

Plans broke down.
Communication failed.
And judgment often became clouded in the middle of battle.

Ye exam bhi aisa hi hai.

Somewhere inside those 100 questions,
Our preparation, instincts, logic and confidence all begin colliding with each other.

Questions that looked easy during mocks suddenly appear unfamiliar.
Two options begin looking equally correct.
And after a point, the real battle is no longer with the paper,
but with your own clouded judgment.

Perhaps prelims is also a kind of fog of war.

And the ones who manage to navigate through that fog emerge victorious.

As Prelims approaches, Telegram is suddenly flooding with “last 5 days strategy” content.

Someone is claiming that a particular topper followed this exact plan in the final few days and cleared the exam.
Someone else starts selling new elimination tricks and hidden logic patterns.
Every day, a new shortcut appears which supposedly changes everything.

This happens every single year.

To everyone associated with me and with this channel, I just want to say these four lines:

“तूफ़ानों से आँख मिलाओ,

मल्लाहों का चक्कर छोड़ो,

There is a very peculiar silence in these last few days.

The kind that begins after you finally close the books for the night.

Throughout the day, the mind remains occupied revising facts, solving questions, planning what to study next. But late at night, when all of that stops for a while, a different kind of thinking begins.

We suddenly start replaying the entire journey.

The mocks that went badly.
The subjects you could never fully master.
The days you wasted.
The fear that maybe you should have done more.

And strangely, even people who have prepared sincerely start feeling incomplete during these moments.

I think this is because prelims is not just an exam of information. It slowly becomes emotional too. Over time, so many hopes, expectations, fears, comparisons, and uncertainties get attached to a single day that silence itself starts feeling heavy.

And maybe that is why these nights feel so different from normal nights.

Not because there is less noise outside,
but because the mind finally gets a moment to speak.

UPSC Prelims is a lot like facing fast bowling in cricket.

When a genuinely quick bowler runs in, a batsman doesn’t really “see” the ball the way people imagine. There’s barely enough time. Most of it is anticipation, instinct, balance, and muscle memory built through endless hours in the nets.

Prelims feels exactly like that.

The moment you open the paper, even the best among us go blank for a few minutes. You don’t know where the questions are coming from, what level they are, or whether the next one is something you know well or have never seen before.

And that’s the point.

The exam is not testing whether you can calmly solve a question sitting at home with tea and unlimited time. It is testing how you respond under pressure, uncertainty, fatigue, confusion and self-doubt.

In that hall, everyone feels challenged.

At that stage, you are not “thinking from scratch” for every question. You are relying on patterns your mind has absorbed through many of mocks, revisions, eliminations, silly mistakes, corrections and repeated exposure.

That is your muscle memory.

Practice creates familiarity. Familiarity creates calmness. Calmness improves judgement.

And just like cricket, panic usually gets you out before difficulty does.

The composed player leaves the unnecessary balls, attacks the hittable ones, survives rough phases and stays in the game long enough.

Was reading If by Rudyard Kipling today, and I uncannily related with these lines.

Maybe it is because of the exam being so close, but I somehow related to them more than I usually would.

These last few days often feel less about studying and more about managing the noise in your own head. Everyone around us seems anxious, uncertain, rushing through things.

These lines reminded to stay steady when anxiety becomes contagious, to trust the preparation without becoming arrogant, and to walk into the examination hall with a settled mind.

Sometimes, composure itself becomes the final revision.

It is always easier to read a concept.

When we study something for the first time, there is curiosity. A natural interest. You are trying to understand, connect dots, and explore something new. That curiosity creates a sense of flow, one idea links to another, and the subject starts making sense almost effortlessly. That’s why first reading often feels smooth, even enjoyable.

But the real challenge begins after that.

Revision is the hardest part of preparation.

There is no novelty in revision. No excitement. No “new discovery.” It demands discipline over curiosity. It asks you to sit with things you already know and still go through them again and again. This is where most people start feeling resistance.

But, the exam does not reward what you have read. It rewards what you can recall, apply, and reproduce under pressure.

And now, with barely 20 days left for the exam, this becomes even more important.

This is not the time to run after new sources.
This is not the time to experiment.
This is the time to revise again and again.

Go back to your notes and PYQs.
Go back to what you have already studied.

I’m sharing a 3-page note on India’s Air Defence Architecture.

Given the last year's Pahalgam episode, this area suddenly becomes very relevant for this year’s Prelims. UPSC has a habit of picking such themes and asking very basic, factual questions around them.

Before you jump to it, a small disclaimer:

If you’ve already covered air defence systems from your own notes or any standard source, don’t switch.

These notes are meant for those who:
- haven’t consolidated this topic yet, or
- want a quick last-day revision sheet

Also, don’t expect depth here. The idea is very simple: Know the name of the system and Know what it does (broad role). That’s it.

You don’t need technical specs, ranges, or overly detailed classifications. UPSC, in recent years, has mostly stayed at a basic identification level in such areas.

Prelims 2020. A deceptively simple question.

The correct answer was (a).

And yet, I didn’t mark it.

Not because I didn’t know it.
But because I didn’t trust it.

Somewhere in the back of my mind, a voice said, “UPSC itna easy thode na poochega.”
So I overthought. I second-guessed. I moved away from the obvious and paid the price.

Looking back, this wasn’t just a mistake. It was a conditioned response.

Practice of test series had trained me to expect traps in every question. Coaching culture thrives on making things “tricky,” “twisted,” and “unpredictable.” And in that process, it erodes your trust in clarity.

So when UPSC actually asks something straightforward, your mind rebels searching for hidden complexity.

In last 20 days, Reduce your exposure to test series and focus on only PYQs. Try to analyse the patterns in the questions and areas and methods UPSC is actually using to trick you.

In these last days, your job is not to learn more.
It is to unlearn the fear of simplicity.

Anxiety isn’t just an emotion in this preparation. It becomes an atmosphere.

We wake up with it, we study with it, we sleep with it. Somewhere along the way, it stops being a reaction and starts becoming our default state.

But is anxiety a byproduct of this preparation cycle? Or is it the cost of attaching our entire identity to a single uncertain outcome?

In this journey, every small failure feels disproportionately large. A bad mock test is not just a bad day. It becomes a question mark on our capability. One unproductive week begins to look like a wasted year. The mind quietly stretches every minor setback into a life-defining verdict.

Perhaps it happens because this exam doesn’t just test knowledge. it absorbs identity.
We are no longer someone preparing for UPSC.
We become our preparation.

And when identity merges with outcome, even small disruptions feel existential.

Happiness, then, doesn’t disappear suddenly. It gets postponed.
“I’ll be happy after Prelims.”
“No, after Mains.”
“Maybe after the final list.”

In this constant deferral, anxiety fills the vacuum.

A few days back, something happened… and it has stayed with me since.


Rajneesh ,an old student, cleared UPPSC and got selected as a BDO. I got on a video call with him… and while talking, he started sharing his journey.

But one thing he said… stayed.
He spoke about his younger brother.

How he stood by him throughout — quietly supporting his preparation, adjusting his own needs, taking a backseat so Rajneesh could move ahead without distractions.

And honestly… aaj ke time mein kaun karta hai aisa?

In a world where everyone is busy chasing their own goals, someone chose to slow down… just so his brother could rise.

That’s not just support.
That’s sacrifice. That’s love in its purest form.
As he was sharing all this, you could feel it

this wasn’t just about clearing an exam.
It was about a family’s bond, about values that don’t get talked about enough.

As a mentor, you begin with syllabus, strategy, and guidance.
But moments like these remind you,

you’re not just part of preparation, you become a small part of stories like these.
Stories where success is never individual…
it is built on unseen efforts and silent strength.
That day, I didn’t feel like a mentor.
I just felt… grateful.

This is how I approached and analysed PYQs over the years.

It is definitely not a one-size-fits-all method. It may not work for everyone, nor is it universally applicable across all subjects.

It is to demonstrate how PYQs can be used as a tool for understanding the exam’s thinking, patterns, and depth rather than merely solving them like another mock test.

I target around 60–62 correct answers

So, the math works out like this:

a) ~30 correct answers from the easy section

b) ~25 correct answers from the 50 questions where there is confusion between two options
(This improves with practice and PYQ analysis)

c) ~5 correct answers (intuition-based)

This ensures at least ~100 marks
(60 correct, 30 wrong, and 10 unattempted)
