MURUGA — also known as Skanda, Kartikeya, and Subramanya — is revered as the commander of the celestial army. He is the force that acts within the human being, guiding the inner struggle toward clarity and maturity.
His birth was awaited by all three worlds, for only He could defeat Tarakasura — a powerful demon before whom even the gods stood helpless.
The son of Shiva and Shakti, He was born endowed with the siddhis and dynamic power of His Mother, as well as the asceticism and unwavering resolve of His Father.
In Hindu tradition, Muruga is regarded as the most strategically minded among the devas. His nature is not rooted in brute force, but in mastery of the mind. The anger that arises in battle is righteous and governed — and thus becomes aligned with cosmic order rather than chaos.
Yet Muruga is not only a warrior, but also a sage and philosopher. There is a well-known account in which He becomes the Guru of His own Father, Shiva — revealing that true wisdom transcends hierarchy and form.
His primary adversary is not an external enemy, but avidyā — ignorance, the root of distorted perception.
His six faces correspond to six forces that bind the human being in limitation: kāma (desire), krodha (anger), lobha(greed), moha (delusion), mada (pride), and mātsarya (envy). These are the true adversaries the Divine Warrior calls us to confront.
The name Skanda in Sanskrit means “one who has leapt forth,” “spilled out,” or “attacks with force.”
Gurudev teaches that Muruga represents an active and conscious assault upon one’s own inner suffering — a subtle, intelligent, and deeply rooted adversary. When the mind is purified and brought under discipline, it transforms from an enemy into a powerful ally, resonating with the Divine.
In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna declares: “Among commanders, I am Skanda.”
And like Saint George the Victorious, with His spear Muruga pierces through evil and ignorance — both within and without.
One must only be willing, believe, and invoke Him.
