The painting portrays Elizaveta Mikhailovna Martynova (1868–1905)—a painter and close friend of Somov. She entered the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1890, the year women were first allowed to enroll.

Martynova’s figure is brought close to the front edge of the canvas, yet her distant gaze—passing straight through the viewer—her pale skin, and the cool blue of her dress, which visually recedes, render her detached and unapproachable. The gesture of her hand pressed to her chest—also the composition’s focal point—acts as a barrier between her and the observer. Her low-cut dress, made of lace-trimmed blue muslin, evokes an era when corseted waists paired with full crinolines emphasized feminine delicacy. In contrast, Martynova’s hairstyle is remarkably simple.
