What is funding in crypto trading?

In cryptocurrencies, Funding refers to a funding rate that is redistributed between traders holding positions in perpetual futures.

Funding — is a periodic payment/write-off for traders with open positions in perpetual futures to compensate for the long-term difference between the price of the underlying asset and the derivative contract

The need for fundings arose from the idea of perpetual futures, which have no maturity and can be held indefinitely. Therefore, a funding rate mechanism is triggered to compensate for the difference between the price of the asset and the contract

How it works

Let's say a trader opened a BTC long at the bottom at $16k and by now his position is in notable plus. Therefore, as BTC grows, the trader receives periodic additional payment to his balance

The other trader waited for BTC at $10k and went short at $16k. Given the recovery of the price of the underlying asset, funds are periodically deducted from his balance, as long as they are there. In fact, he donates to the one who opened a long at the bottom and dreams that the market will fall earlier than it will liquidate him

That is, the Funding mechanism accrues or deducts funds from the account of a trader with perpetual futures, depending on whether his position is in plus or deficit. The balance will be updated definitively when the futures are closed

How to use?

Funding data on the exchange is available to all traders, you can see whether longs or shorts are winning and when the next payout is due

The exchange recommends using this metric to choose when to enter a trade, so as not to get charged immediately after opening a position or, on the contrary, to pick up the first bonus as quickly as possible

There is also a mechanism of fund arbitrage, when opposite positions are opened on the spot and futures market. That's how you protect yourself from losses in trading and can make profits through fanning if you guessed the trade

Traders also consider the story with fundings to be a conspiracy theory on the part of cryptocurrency exchanges on the principle of "shaving everyone". That's why they try to use this metric to predict price by trading against the crowd

2 Types of Trading Flags You must know!

Horizontal flags (Trading Range):

These flags are the strongest type of flag. Horizontal flags indicate that the opposite side of the trend is incapable of creating a highs/lows opposite trend.

Flag with minor highs/lows:

This type of flag is weaker than the first one. The opposite side of the trend was able to create the opposite highs/lows (Minor highs/lows).

️ Flags Tips:

1) Before trading with flags, always check out the trend before them. Trends must be strong so the possibility of flag breakout increases.

2) After checking the trend before flag, check out the candles within flags. Less than 20 bars in Horizontal flags is acceptable but more than 20 bars make the market Neutral with 50-50 chance of breakout.

Calculation:

RRR = Potential Profit
Potential Loss

• Potential Profit: This is the amount you anticipate making from a successful trade. It is often measured in terms of the distance between your entry point and your profit target.

• Potential Loss: This is the amount you are willing to risk or expect to lose if the trade goes against you. It is usually determined by the distance between your entry point and your stop-loss level.
Interpretation:

• A risk-reward ratio greater than 1 indicates a potentially profitable trade, as the expected profit is larger than the expected loss.

• A risk-reward ratio less than 1 suggests that the potential loss is greater than the potential profit, which may make the trade less favorable.

Example: Let's say you enter a trade with an entry price of $50, a profit target at $55, and a stop-loss at $48.
Potential Profit = $55 -$50=$5

Potential Loss = $50 − $48 = $2

RRR = $5
$2 =2.5

In this example, the risk-reward ratio is 2.5, meaning for every $2 risked, there's a potential profit of $5.

Common risk management strategies

💡 1% trading rule

The 1% trading rule (or 1% risk rule) is a method traders use to limit their losses to a maximum of 1% of their trading capital per trade. This means they can either trade with 1% of their portfolio per trade or with a bigger order with a stop-loss equal to 1% of their portfolio value. The 1% trading rule is commonly used by day traders but can also be adopted by swing traders.

The risk-reward ratio calculates the risk that a trader will be taking relative to the potential reward. To calculate the risk-reward ratio of a trade you’re considering, simply divide the potential loss by the potential profit. So if your stop-loss is at 5% and your target is at 15% profit, your risk-reward ratio would be 1:3, meaning that the potential profit is three times higher than the risk.

What is a candlestick chart ?

😝A candlestick chart is a type of financial chart that graphically represents the price moves of an asset for a given timeframe. As the name suggests, it’s made up of candlesticks, each representing the same amount of time. The candlesticks can represent virtually any period, from seconds to years.
