The weather is really leisure-inducing, so I’ve been mostly lying in bed, eating strawberries, watching The Boys aaaand reading this bad boy 😍

I feel like everyone and their mother read the Strike novels at this point but better late than never, amirite?

This detective is a perfect mix of everything that I like: a good whodunnit story, will-they-won’t-they tension and simply a style that reads well 🙏

But I guess the best part tho is that there’re like five more books to burn through 🤩

Have you read it or heard of it? did you like it??
I’ve watched a series adaptation this winter but I positively remember nothing 🙂

You probably already know that we say “a picture” referring to a movie, because originally they were called “moving pictures”.

But did you know why we say “footage” to refer to anything recorded?
Cause when movies were shot on physical film, the film was measured in FEET.
FEET.

Actually, hobby changed a lot during the summer. In 1375, when the word first appeared in print (“hoby”, “hobyn”), it meant a pony, a small or middle-sized horse of an Irish breed ☘️

In the 1500s such horses started to be called a hobby horse 🐎 The name also applied to a toy consisting of a stick with a horse's head 🐴

In the 1600s this sense was extended to any favorite occupation or pursuit (modern meaning), and in the 1800s the dropped the “horse” and it was called just “hobby”!

What do celebrities, scientists and IELTS students share in common?

They all use hedging language!

Whether it's to not get cancelled or to score 7.5+ at IELTS, hedging is used to manage the strength of a claim in order to sound more academic and realistic. Or to soften your opinions and avoid being too direct.
Basically, it's a way to give yourself more credibility and catch fewer strays for what you say or write 😎

See for yourself:
❌ Too much screen time makes children stupid.
✅ Too much screen time might make children less effective learners.

So how do you do it in practice?

1⃣ Modal verbs: may/might/can/could
Walking might improve your mental health.

2⃣ Adverbs of frequency or probability: often, generally, usually, sometimes, potentially
Celebrities often struggle to separate their personal life from the public one.

3⃣ Verbs that soften claims: tend to, appear to, seem to
Employees tend to perform better when motivated.

4⃣ Limiting quantifiers: some / many / a number of / a proportion of
Many people find modern dating challenging. (not all!)

5⃣Phrases:
It is widely believed that…
It is often argued that…
In many cases…
To some extent…
To some extent, AI can be beneficial. (double hedging!!)

Is your house on Pretty Girl Avenue? 💖

Same 💅 We've talked about the etymology of , as well as , so I guess it's time we've touched on avenue!

Like every third word in English, "avenue" came from French, originally meaning a (mostly tree-lined 🌳) path or approach leading to a house or estate.
But if you dig deeper, you find the verb "avenir", meaning “to come to” or “to arrive.”

🐈‍⬛ With French notoriously being a Latin copycat, ofc avenir traces back to Latin:
ad = “to”
venire = “to come”

The modern meaning (a type of street) was borrowed into English in the 18th-19th centuries, and it's now also used figuratively (an avenue for success, growth, etc).
