Life in the 41st Millennium
In the grim darkness of the 41st Millennium, the Beastmen exist in a state of perpetual persecution. Officially, they remain a sanctioned abhuman strain, but the Ecclesiarchy preaches that all mutation is a sign of corruption, and the Inquisition views every Beastman as a potential heretic. Most Imperial worlds slaughter them on sight. On those worlds where they are permitted to live, they are confined to the lowest levels of hive cities, performing the most degrading labor, living in squalor, and surviving only because their physical strength and resilience make them useful.
The Beastmen of the Imperium have no homeworld, no culture beyond the brutal traditions of their herds. They live in constant fear of the Black Ships that come to cull the mutant population, of the witch hunters who burn entire hab-blocks to root out corruption, and of the mobs of pious citizens who occasionally rise up to purge the "unclean" from their midst. Some turn to the Chaos Gods in desperation, seeking power and revenge against a society that has given them nothing but suffering. Others cling to a desperate, futile loyalty, hoping that one day the Emperor will see their faith and reward them for their endurance.
The Chaos Herds: The True Children of the Dark Gods
For those Beastmen who embrace Chaos, there is no distinction between their mutation and their faith. They see themselves not as cursed, but as blessed—touched by the Ruinous Powers and elevated above the weak, pure humans who rejected them. In the Warp and among the forces of Chaos, Beastmen are a common sight, serving as the rank-and-file of countless warbands. They are particularly favored by Khorne, whose worshipers value their strength and ferocity, and by Nurgle, who sees their physical corruption as a form of divine blessing.
The most organized Beastmen forces are the Chaos Herds, warbands that combine Beastmen of all types—the massive, bull-headed Gor, the swift, wolf-like Ungor, and the towering, monstrous Minotaur—into cohesive fighting forces. These herds roam the desolate worlds of the Eye of Terror and the lawless regions beyond Imperial space, raiding, pillaging, and offering their kills to the dark gods. Some Beastmen rise to positions of significant power, becoming Chaos Champions or even Daemon Princes, though such ascension is rare.
The Beastman Within the Astra Militarum
Despite the Imperium's official hostility, the Astra Militarum continues to make use of Beastmen auxiliaries, particularly in war zones where expendable troops are needed. These regiments are formed from Beastman populations that have somehow survived Imperial "sanctioning" and are deemed useful enough to be conscripted rather than exterminated. They are given the most basic equipment, often little more than a lasgun and a bayonet, and are sent into the most brutal assaults, where their strength and resilience can be used to absorb enemy fire and soften defenses for the "real" Imperial troops.
Life in these regiments is brutal, even by Guard standards. Beastmen are denied proper rations, proper medical care, and any recognition for their service. They are commanded by human officers who treat them as little better than slaves, and they are often deployed alongside Penal Legions, their status barely above that of condemned criminals. Yet they fight. Whether from desperation, from a strange, twisted loyalty, or from simple survival instinct, the Beastmen of the Astra Militarum continue to serve an Imperium that hates them, hoping that perhaps, one day, their sacrifice will be enough.
