Post-pandemic M&A value is concentrating at the very top of the market.

Q1'26 alone delivered $7.6B in upfront value — Moonton anchoring the quarter. Add the $56B EA take-private announced in H2'25, and the picture becomes clear: nearly all the large-ticket value is flowing into a narrow cohort of scaled, IP-rich publishers.

The long tail of sub-$50m deals keeps ticking along. Without much valuation lift.

The gap between "scaled" and "not yet scaled" has never been more expensive to close.

War Robots turns 12 — and working at http://MY.GAMES/, it never stops being impressive to watch.

325 million registered users. 20 million new players added in the last year alone. A game that launched in 2014 on mobile and is still growing. That's not luck — that's a decade of consistent craft from the Pixonic team.

A few things from this past year that stand out to me: cross-platform progression finally shipped and has already been used 90,000+ times. Kill Cam launched. An official APK for direct access. These aren't flashy features — they're the kind of quality-of-life work that keeps a community loyal long-term.

12 years. Billion Dollar Club. Still adding ~1.7 million players a month. The bar for what "live service done right" looks like just keeps getting higher.

Eight are mobile.

Moonton → Savvy: $6bn
Loom → Scopely: $1bn
AppLovin apps → Tripledot: $800m
JustPlay → NCSOFT: $289m
Bluetile → Nazara: $201m

Where multiples are visible, they cluster tightly: 1.3x–1.7x revenue, 7x–15x EBITDA.

Mobile isn't "hot" in the hype sense. It's just where you still find scaled, profitable, auditable cash flows in gaming. PC and console studios make hits. Mobile studios make ARR.

That distinction is what acquirers are paying for.

Gaming dealmaking opened 2026 with a clear split personality.

M&A hit $7.7bn across 52 transactions — the strongest quarter of the post-pandemic era once you strip out the mega-deals (Activision, EA). Mid-market consolidation is doing the heavy lifting, not headline-grabbing takeovers.
Public offerings stayed muted at $1.0bn across 11 deals.

Private investments slowed further to $0.8bn across 101 rounds, continuing the gradual deflation from pandemic highs.

The pattern is telling: strategic buyers are back with conviction, public markets are cautious, and venture is still recalibrating. Consolidation, not capital formation, is the story of this cycle.

The "Content Winter" is officially over.

In Q1 2026, we saw 8 gaming M&A deals over $100M. To put that in perspective:

H1 2023: 0 deals.
H2 2024: 2 deals.
Q1 2026: 8 deals.

We haven’t seen this much large-ticket activity since the post-pandemic peak.

What’s the catalyst? The "Old Guard" (Western incumbents) didn't just leave a vacuum – a new wave of strategic buyers stepped into it. Names like Behaviour Interactive, NCSOFT, Nazara Technologies Limited, and Savvy Games Group are rewriting the playbook.

The takeaway for founders: The "buyer universe" isn't shrinking; it's diversifying. If you've been waiting for "bid depth" to return before exploring a sale, the water is officially warm.

Kakao Games just handed over control to Japan's LY Corporation (the company behind LINE and Yahoo Japan) for ~$370M.

Here's what actually happened:

LY Corp bought shares from Kakao Corp (the parent), injected fresh capital, and added a convertible bond on top. All three instruments close simultaneously in late May. After that, LY Corp holds ~33% – rising to ~39% if the bond converts. Kakao Corp goes from 37% to 15%.

Why does this make sense for both sides?

LY Corp has 100M LINE users in Japan and basically no gaming content worth mentioning. Their gaming arm, Line Games, is financially wrecked. Kakao Games gives them a real publisher to distribute through LINE in Japan and Southeast Asia.

Kakao Corp, on the other hand, is in the middle of a big portfolio cleanup – went from 119 affiliates to 94 in one year. They're refocusing on KakaoTalk and AI. Gaming is a distraction for them right now.

The catch: Kakao Games has been losing money for five quarters straight. Revenue down 26% YoY in Q4. Their recovery bet is a pipeline of 9 titles in 2026–27, including Odin Q and ArcheAge Chronicles – both repeatedly delayed.

So LY Corp is essentially buying a turnaround story. The $200M fresh capital goes straight into global publishing, M&A for new IPs, and those upcoming launches.

Whether the LINE distribution thesis actually works in practice – that's the real question to watch.

The gist: The gaming market entered 2026 with a clear divergence: strong consumer engagement and accelerating M&A on one side, compressed public valuations and retreating early-stage capital on the other.

Here's what the quarter looked like:

Market environment: Steam set new all-time highs in both quarterly revenue ($5.6bn) and peak concurrent users (42.7m), sustaining +12% YoY LTM growth. Console revenue hit a record $21.7bn, powered by the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware cycle. Mobile IAP spend held steady at ~$20.5bn, though download volumes fell to multi-year lows.

Dealmaking: M&A value reached $7.7bn across 52 transactions – the highest quarterly deal value in the post-pandemic period (excl. ATVI and EA). Content-focused M&A hit its highest level since the pandemic boom, with mobile studios accounting for the majority of headline acquisitions. Savvy Games Group's ~$6bn acquisition of Moonton and Scopely's ~$1bn purchase of Loom Games led the quarter.

Capital markets & private investment: Gaming stocks came under broad pressure amid macro headwinds and AI-driven rotation, with trading multiples compressing across all segments. Public capital offerings remained subdued at $1bn across 11 deals. Why is it so hard to launch a new mobile hit in 2026?

If you check the latest Q4 market data from Aream & Co., one stat really stands out: 70% of the top-20 grossing mobile games are now more than 4 years old.

We’re seeing a "Legacy Lock" in the mobile market. Players aren't just playing their favorite games; they’re living in them. Legacy titles have built such deep competitive moats through live services that new releases are hitting historic lows because the cost of entry is just too high.

A few quick takeaways:

– The "New" is disappearing: App Store releases with at least 5k installs have dropped by more than half since 2020.
– Playtime is sticky: We’re moving from a hit-driven "launch and leave" model to a "forever game" model.
– PC is the escape valve: While mobile feels crowded, Steam is still seeing 20% YoY growth with a healthy mix of new IPs.
