National Mission on Libraries (NML) is a Government of India scheme launched to modernize libraries, strengthen library networks, and improve access to knowledge resources across the country.
➨ NML functions under the Ministry of Culture.
➨ Library is a State subject under the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution of India.
➨ NML has four major components for library development and modernization.
➨ The Indian Culture Portal under National Virtual Library of India (NVLI) was launched in December 2019.
➨ NVLI Version 2.0 was launched on 5 March 2026 with AI-powered chatbot “Bharti”.
➨ Bharti chatbot is integrated with the Government of India’s Bhashini platform supporting 22 Indian languages.
➨ The portal provides virtual tours, 3D walkthroughs, advanced search, and digital cultural resources.
➨ Under NML, financial assistance has been sanctioned to 28 State Central Libraries, 41 District Libraries, and 5 Ministry of Culture Libraries.
