On May 2, 2026, St. Mary’s University held a comprehensive briefing session for all planning units as part of its preparation for the upcoming ISO 21001:2025 self-evaluation. The session was organized and conducted by the University’s ISO team. Participants were reminded that the self-evaluation period runs from May 4 to May 13, 2026, and all reports must be submitted within this timeframe. The ISO team explained that each office is required to complete a standardized checklist covering every requirement of ISO 21001:2025.

The session concluded with a strong call for collaboration and openness, highlighting that the success of the self-evaluation depends on the active participation of all planning units. By engaging fully and providing evidence-based assessments, the University aims to strengthen its Educational Organization Management System and ensure readiness for the upcoming audit.

St. Mary’s University (SMU) successfully undertook a week-long institutional quality audit conducted by the Education and Training Authority (ETA) from April 20–25, 2026. The audit, carried out under the ADRI approach, examined SMU’s governance, academic programs, infrastructure, and quality assurance practices. The university actively involved its leadership, faculty, students, and committees through document reviews, discussions, and site visits. Each day concluded with sessions that consolidated findings and ensured effective communication with the audit team.

Through this process, SMU reaffirmed its dedication to accountability, continuous improvement, and building trust with its community and stakeholders.

St. Mary’s University has taken a significant step in its re-accreditation journey by revising and validating two major programs: Accounting and Finance, and Economics. On March 28, 2026, the university held a curriculum review workshop at the American Corner of its Main Campus, attended by SMU staff alongside representatives from the National Bank of Ethiopia, leading commercial banks and insurance companies, private universities, industry experts, employers, students, and alumni. The broad participation reflected the national importance of the exercise and the university’s commitment to aligning its academic programs with both global standards and local industry needs.

Ethiopian Universities Embrace VR and AR Technology Through International "MaDE" Initiative
The Methodology for Didactic Education for Universities of Applied Sciences (MaDE-for-UASs) project is gaining significant momentum as it enters its third week of specialized technical training for Ethiopian educators.
Selected lecturers from across Ethiopia’s Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) are currently participating in a high-level Training of Trainers (ToT) program centered on Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). The initiative, coordinated locally by Kotebe University of Education and Dire Dawa University, aims to revolutionize the traditional classroom by integrating immersive, simulation-based tools into the national curricula.
The training is delivered by academic experts from the Free University of Bolzano, Italy. Now in its third week of consecutive sessions, the program focuses on equipping lecturers with the technical proficiency to use virtual environments that would help bring real-world workplace scenarios to the classroom.
The hands-on training sessions provide instructors with the technical competencies required to leverage VR and AR technologies within their instructional design. By mastering these immersive tools, faculty can effectively integrate high-fidelity simulations into their course delivery, enhancing both student engagement and learning outcomes.
The MaDE-for-UASs project serves as a strategic pillar in supporting the Ethiopian government’s Reform Agenda (RA). By providing educators and students with access to workplace experiences via VR and AR simulations, the project seeks to bridge the gap between academic theory and industrial practice. This digital transition is expected to produce a more "work-ready" and highly qualified workforce capable of competing in both domestic and international labor markets.
The project is powered by a consortium comprising 9 universities and one industry partner (seven of them from Ethiopia and three from Europe). St. Mary’s University (SMU) stands as a key institutional partner among the Ethiopian universities driving the success of the MaDE-for-UASs initiative.
By fostering these cross-border academic partnerships, the MaDE project is setting a new benchmark for instructional design and technological adoption within the Ethiopian higher education sector.
