THE FOOD PYRAMID: A guide to daily food choice…

A food pyramid is a representation of the optimal number of servings to be eaten each day from each of the basic food groups.
"Healthy Eating Food Pyramid" guide as you pick your food in which grains should be taken as the major dietary source.

• Eat more fruit and vegetables.
• Have a moderate amount of meat, fish, egg, milk and their alternatives.
• Reduce salt, fat/oil and sugar.
• Trim fat from meat before cooking. Choose low-fat cooking methods such as steaming, stewing, simmering, boiling, scalding or cooking with non-stick frying pans.
• Reduce the use of frying and deep-frying.
These can help us achieve balanced diet and promote health.

How much of different kinds of food should I eat to stay healthy?

1. Eat the Right Food :
Since different foods have different nutritional values, it is not possible to obtain all the nutrients we need from a single food. According to the Healthy Eating Food Pyramid, we have to eat a variety of foods among all food groups as well as within each group in order to get different nutrients and meet our daily needs.

2. Eat the Right Amount:
Neither eating too much nor too little is good for our health. Every day, we need a specific amount of nutrients to maintain optimal health. If we do not eat enough, under-nutrition and symptoms of deficiency are likely to develop; while over-nutrition and obesity can be resulted when we consume an excessive amount of any type of food. Therefore, we have to eat the right amount of food to stay healthy.

POMELOS

Pomelo also known as pamplemousse is a citrus fruit and it is closely related to grapefruits and other members of the Citrus genus. Its scientific name is Citrus maxima. It is quite large in size and the closest in size to these kinds of citrus fruits is a grapefruit.

Pomelo is primarily found in Southeast Asia, which is its native region, it's shaped like a teardrop and has green or yellow flesh and a thick pale rind. It is relatively less popular in other parts of the world because it typically takes eight years to grow before the seeds can begin to flower and bear any fruits. Pomelo tastes similar to grapefruit, but it's sweeter and contains several vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that make it a healthy addition to diet.

Pomelo can be added to your diet in the following ways: By cutting the pomelos into small pieces, mix them with other fruits and have it as a fruit salad; by having them as a snack and by blending them to make fresh pomelo juice.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF POMELO

1. It aids digestion because it's rich in insoluble fiber which adds bulks up the stool, promotes smooth movement in the digestive tract, and prevents constipation and diarrhea.

2. It is rich in antioxidants which can prevent and reverse cellular damage caused by free radicals.

3. It regulates blood pressure because pomelo is a good source of potassium which reduces the strain on the heart and lowers the chances of atherosclerosis, heart attack and stroke.

4. It is an anti-inflammatory fruit because of its high antioxidant content and it's also an excellent source of vitamin C.

5. Pomelos maintain heart health by reducing the cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the body and are also a rich source of different types of vitamins and minerals like calcium, iron, copper, zinc, manganese, and potassium all of which are important for maintaining and improving bone health.

6. It promotes weight loss because it contains protein and fiber both of which induce a feeling of fullness for a longer period of time.

The high levels of vitamin C and potassium in this fruit can make it hazardous for patients with liver and kidney conditions.

Vitamin Supplements

Vitamins are organic compounds that people need in small quantities for various metabolic processes which a person takes, often as pills, beyond those eaten in a normal balanced diet. The most commonly taken are multivitamins and vitamin C or ascorbic acid.

Multivitamins tend to be best taken earlier in the day, as the B vitamins in them might stimulate metabolism and brain function too much for a relaxing evening or before bed. Those who may need vitamin supplements include women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, people who consume alcohol in amounts over those recommended limits, drug users and the elderly.

Vitamin supplement is not a replacement for a healthy diet so they must be taken along with a balanced diet. Because it might induce people to eat poorly on the excuse that in any event they are protected nutritionally. The best counsel is to take vitamin supplements only on the recommendation of your medical doctor.

NAUSEA

Nausea is a state that preceed vomit or an uneasiness of stomach that often occurs before vomiting. Nausea is not disease but they are symptoms which is cause by: intense pain, early stage of pregnancy,food poisoning, overeating,ulcers, infection,a reaction to certain smell or odour,motion sickness or seasickness etc.

What can be done to relieve nausea?

There are several ways to relieve nausea which are:

1. Drink clear or ice cold drinks.
2. Eat dry foods such as plain crackers or cookies, dry cereal or toast when you wake up and every few hours during the day because nausea is often worse on empty stomach and dry food can relieve some of the discomfort.
3. Avoid fried, greasy or sweet foods.
4. Avoid food with unpleasant or strong odour.
5. Eat slowly and avoid large meals and infrequent meals because the smaller and more frequent the meals are, the more comfortable will be.
6. Drink beverages slowly during your meals after eating solid food because drinking liquid on an empty stomach can add to the feeling of nausea.
7. Avoid activity after eating.
8. Eat food and supplement that are high in calories and protein to maintain the nutrition when you can not eat a lot.

"Resting after eating and keeping the head elevated about 12 inches above the feet helps reduce nausea".
