Some time ago someone asked me what the difference between painting and photography is.

I realised it seemed obvious to me. My first thought was: “Why are you asking?”. I was sure it would be easy to explain! But I only thought so.

To be honest, I’m not even sure how to define photography. Since I’m an art history student and just a creative person, I care about aesthetics – I mean, A LOT. For me, photography is art. I enjoy taking photos of my surroundings, nature, cats, and so on. But photography isn’t always about aesthetics. And honestly, it’s a little hard for me to accept that…

This question naturally leads us to conceptual art. I think many non-aesthetic photos are a part of conceptual art. They have their own messages, ideas. And there’s a really funny, philosophical thing! People usually don’t like it because it isn’t beautiful. And I can totally understand why. For some reason, we are used to accepting art as beauty. Like ‘Art=Aesthetics’. But there are so many genres, styles, and concepts of art, so we shouldn’t stop there. Maybe sometimes it’s better to focus on the concept without expecting it to make sense.
Yeah, I know it sounds strange again haha and we come to the question of what art is.

Moreover, I would explain it as over-saturation caused by mass media and social media. It seems like there is a “right aesthetic”. And unaesthetic conceptual art is like a rebellious kid who wants to be “different”, change something – because otherwise who will?

So, is there really a difference between photo and painting? Yes, there is. Photography can’t tell you about the artistry beneath the surface the way a painting can. Meanwhile painting probably won’t be able to reflect a real image of a moment, of an environment.

💞 Aesthetic of an Art History Student 💞

I hadn’t really wanted to write a whole post, but I started commenting on every picture in my head and realised something

• The photo with the phrase isn’t my own thought or anything — it was just funny to randomly come across something like that at the bus station

• Stained glass! Just a masterpiece. I had never really thought I liked it so much, but here we are

• And my first painting for analysis. I remember how I tried to describe every single detail and brushstroke, it was so hard and still so funny! I’m sure this artwork has a special place in my heart, to be honest

So maybe it’s important sometimes to remember which path you’ve taken. Like a silent reminder of your own power and love

Some time ago I attended Arman Simonyan’s art exhibition at the https://t.me/kostergallery — and moreover, I was one of its curators ❤️‍🔥

It was such a pleasure that words can hardly describe how much I gained from this experience. And I don’t mean only as an art historian, but also as a person — with personal feelings, fears and doubts.

Being a curator was an honour. I’m still a student and sometimes think I don’t have enough knowledge or competence. But honestly? That’s bull⭐️it. It’s just a path — part of the process. You should just do it — new experiences (and maybe a new level of yourself) are often hidden behind these emotions and thoughts.

I discussed artworks with the artist, other curators and art mediators. I also wrote labels for the exhibition, oversaw preparations, and helped create the exhibition website with the artist’s works for sale 🍕
I talked with a lot of cool people and simply loved being surrounded by this incredible vibe. 🥹🔥

This is only the beginning, but I already love it. Thank you!

Just a masterpiece. But really, isn’t it funny how animals, especially cats, seem to have human traits in paintings from the Middle Ages and beyond. Maybe there’s something we don’t know about cats from that era?
