💎erbs, Objects, and SDs: How to Tell Bathos From Zeugma

📖🗝📚

Hello guys!
One of the stumbling blocks for a lot of us is the difference between two stylistic devices: bathos and zeugma. Let's discuss why they are actually different:
Even though both SDs are based on the unconventional combination of lexical units, in zeugma the head word actualises its several meanings, while in bathos — only one.

😱 For example:
• While on the hunt, he caught a bird and a cold.
1. To catch (+ a bird) — to take hold of something;
2. To catch (+ a flu) — to become ill.
→ The verb has 2 different meanings, so this is zeugma

• He had come home with one leg and half-mad.
1. To come home (+ with one leg) — to return home;
2. To come home (+ half-mad) — still to return home.
→ The meaning of the verb is the same, so this is bathos
