Children's Hospital in Zurich

A new university children's hospital has opened in Zurich, designed by the Swiss firm Herzog & de Meuron. With its facade adorned with intricately carved wooden slats, the building resembles a forest wellness retreat. It’s organized around an inner courtyard filled with tall trees and ferns, creating a calming, natural atmosphere at its heart.

Jacques Herzog, one of the studio's founders, believes that “architecture can support healing.” He emphasized that hospitals in many countries—including Switzerland—have often been uninviting, and architects are now striving to change that.

Imagination takes flight: three unusual Soviet hotels and what became of them

Soviet architects dreamed up countless groundbreaking designs—bold, futuristic projects that still captivate the mind today.

Hotel «Amanauz», Dombay. Completed in 1985, this hotel never opened to guests—perhaps due to lost funding, or fading interest in the resort’s development following the 1980 Olympics boom.

Sanatorium «Kurpaty», Yalta. This one fared much better. Built in the 1980s, the Soviet-era sanatorium is still operational, welcoming guests to this day. Perched on three massive 9-meter-wide piles, the structure resembles a giant flying saucer.

Hotel «Turist», Baku. Opened in 1974, designed by architects V. Shulgin and E. Melkhisedekov, it operated for nearly three decades until 2004. Then, acquired by the company «Ugur 97», the building was gutted down to its first floor. Its shell remains standing—a silent relic to this day.

A mountain refuge in the Pyrenees by Snøhetta

The architects at Snøhetta are designing a rest stop for tourists visiting the national park in the French Pyrenees. In two years, this mountain shelter with a green roof will open its doors to visitors.

The Refuge de Barroude will serve as a resting point along the upper trail and as an operational hub for park staff. The design concept emphasizes blending seamlessly into the landscape—thanks to its curved, vegetated roof—so that human presence feels subtle and respectful within this dramatic natural setting.

The two-story building will host communal spaces, including a guest reception area, a support center for national park rangers, guest bedrooms with mountain views, and a bar and restaurant overlooking Lake Barroud.

A 1930s house in Kraków with a folding staircase

This home in the city's green district needed a refresh, and designer Wola Justowska from studio Lessness was determined to preserve its historic charm. She introduced bold colors, rich textures, and vintage details, bringing new life to the old building’s interiors.

Original architectural elements were carefully preserved and thoughtfully combined with modern additions. The original herringbone parquet in the living room was gently restored to its authentic hue. For the hallway area, dark blue floor tiles were selected to complement the home’s core palette—shades of blue, burgundy, and orange—accented with touches of red, purple, and pink.
