In his interpretation of the scene, Vitberg draws on the legacy of Renaissance masters, particularly Raphael Sanzio. While borrowing certain artistic effects from Raphael’s Vatican frescoes, he reimagines the composition in his own distinct way. Departing from traditional iconography, Vitberg’s angel does not lead Peter by the hand, but gently supports him by the shoulder. Peter, stretching his right hand into the dim half-light, slowly emerges from the dungeon and cautiously steps toward the staircase. The apostle looks trustfully at his divine savior—illuminated by a radiant beam of light. The angel doesn't walk, but glides beside him. This sense of effortless flight is echoed in the blazing red drapery billowing upward, flowing across the bare back of the golden-haired celestial being.
