Someone told me they paid KES 25,000 to secure an industrial attachment at a garage.

A garage.

And they paid because they had no choice. Because three months of industrial attachment is supposed to be a university requirement, and nobody was giving them one for free. Because the desperation of needing to complete a course unit is apparently worth KES 25,000 to the right person who figured that out.

This is what we have normalised.

Students cannot secure basic attachments, so they pay for them.

Graduates cannot secure internships, so they take unpaid ones that go for months with promises of absorption that never come.

And in between all of that, some people identified the desperation and turned it into a business.

Pay to work. Pay to learn. Pay to be exploited.

And nobody is asking the companies why they cannot accommodate one student for three months without charging them for the privilege.

Here is what bothers me most.

These are not lazy people. They studied. They showed up. They did everything the system asked. And the system responded by telling them that even the bottom rung of the ladder has an entry fee.

The garage owner knows the student cannot graduate without that stamp.

The company knows the graduate is desperate enough to work for free just to build a CV. Everyone in the chain knows the power dynamic, and most of them are using it.

This is not an internship system.

It is exploitation with a letter of completion at the end.

If you are in a position to take on an intern or attach a student, do it properly. Pay them something. Teach them something. Give them real work.

Because the KES 25,000 they paid to be in that garage was probably borrowed.
And the least they deserve is something worth the debt.

Your child did not consent to being on the internet.

Think about that for a moment before you post the next photo.

They cannot consent. They do not understand what the internet is, what it remembers, who has access to it, or what happens to an image once it leaves your phone and enters a platform owned by a company whose terms and conditions you agreed to without reading.

You made that decision for them.
And that is worth sitting with seriously.

We live in a time where parents document everything. First steps. First day of school. Bath time. Tantrums. Funny moments. Milestones.

All of it going onto Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp status, shared with hundreds of people including the ones you have not spoken to in years and the ones you barely know in real life.

It feels harmless because the intention is harmless.
But intention and consequence are two different things.

Here is what most parents have not thought through.

The photos you post of your child today are building a digital footprint that will exist when that child is fifteen, twenty, thirty years old.

Images you posted when they were three will be searchable, shareable, and permanently attached to their identity in ways they never agreed to and cannot undo.

There are people online who collect images of children with no good intentions.

This is not paranoia. It is documented. It is reported. It happens on the same platforms where you post the birthday photo with the school uniform visible, the location tagged, and the full name in the caption.

That combination of information is more than enough for someone with bad intentions to piece together a picture of your child's life that you never meant to share.

Beyond safety there is dignity.

Your child's embarrassing moments, their vulnerable moments, their everyday moments, belong to them.

Not to your followers. Not to the algorithm. Not to a platform that will use that content to sell advertising to strangers.

There is a version of your child who grows up and finds years of their childhood catalogued online without ever being asked.

Some will be fine with it. Some will not.

The question is whether they should have been given the choice.

Keep the memories. Take all the photos you want.
But the world does not need to see your child grow up in real time.

Some things are allowed to be private.
Protect what cannot protect itself.

"Courses zingine huko campus ni za kusaidia lecturer asikose kazi."

I saw this tweet and I have never agreed with anything more in my life.

Some of the units you are taking in university right now exist for one reason only. To make sure the lecturer has something to teach on Tuesday at 9am.

Not because the content is relevant. Not because the industry needs it. Not because it will help you get a job.

Because the lecturer needs a salary. They have children. They have rent. They need a timetable that justifies their paycheck.

And you are the one paying for it.

You are sitting in a lecture hall learning theories that were written in 1987. Using textbooks that reference companies that no longer exist. Studying case studies from economies that look nothing like Kenya in 2026.

And nobody is updating the curriculum because the people who wrote it are the same people teaching it. And they are not going to fire themselves.

Think about this.

The world of digital marketing changes every 6 months. AI tools are evolving every 3 months. New programming languages emerge every year. Social media platforms change their algorithms weekly.

But your university syllabus has not changed since 2015.

You are being trained for a world that moved on without you.

Meanwhile someone who skipped university and spent 6 months on YouTube and Udemy learning practical skills is already earning more than your lecturer.

That is the reality nobody wants to say out loud.

Universities should be updating their curriculums every 3 to 5 years. They should be teaching execution not just theory. They should be bringing in industry practitioners not just academics who have never worked outside a classroom.

But they will not. Because the system is designed to protect itself. Not to prepare you.

So what do you do?

Take what is useful from university. Ignore what is not. And spend your evenings learning the things the syllabus will never teach you.

Because the market does not care which unit you passed.

It cares what you can do.

And right now most graduates cannot do much.

Fix that before you graduate.

Someone told me last week they were too old to start learning digital skills.

They are 43.

I did not know where to begin with how wrong that statement was.
Too old. At 43. In 2026. When the internet has been commercially available for less than thirty years and most of the people who built the biggest things on it started with no roadmap because the roadmap did not exist yet.

Let me tell you what 43 is in the context of building something online.

An advantage most people your age have not figured out how to use yet.

You have lived long enough to know what real problems feel like. Not theoretical problems from a YouTube video about entrepreneurship. Real ones.

The kind that cost money, relationships, and years to navigate. That experience is the raw material of every good business, every compelling piece of content, every service that solves something people genuinely need solved.

The 22 year old is still learning what the problems are. You already know them intimately.

You have discipline built before there was an algorithm to reward it. You showed up to jobs, raised families, managed difficult situations, and kept going through things that would have broken a younger version of you.

That muscle is exactly what building online requires when results are slow and everything in you is asking whether this is worth it.

You have credibility that cannot be manufactured. When you speak about something you have lived for decades, people feel the difference between knowledge and wisdom. Wisdom cannot be faked with good lighting and a ring light.

Now I hear the other side of this.

Miaka imeenda. The years have passed. The window closed. Too late to compete with people who grew up with smartphones.

Here is what I want to say to that.

The years going by is not a loss. It is an accumulation. Every year added something.

Experience. Perspective. Patience. The ability to see through short term noise and recognise what actually matters. These are not weaknesses in the digital space.

They are differentiators.

And you are not competing with the 22 year old. You are serving a completely different audience. The people who need what you know are the people who have lived enough to recognise its value. That audience is large, real, and almost nobody is speaking to it with the authority you could bring.

The person who starts at 43 and commits for five years arrives at 48 with something real. Five years of compounding effort, growing audience, and accumulated skill.
And 48 is not old.

It is exactly the right age to be unstoppable.

Buying followers is not a growth strategy.

It is a slow way to kill your page while feeling like you are doing something smart.
And if you are running a business or building a brand, it is even more dangerous than you think.

Here is what that purchase gets you.

A number that lies. Not reach. Not clients. Not trust. Not brand deals. Just a figure sitting at the top of your profile that looks impressive to people who do not know how to read past it.

Everyone who matters knows how to read past it.

The moment you buy followers, your engagement rate collapses. And engagement rate is the metric that tells the story of a page.

It is the ratio between how many people follow you and how many of them respond to what you post.

When you have ten thousand followers and your posts are pulling forty likes and two comments, the algorithm does not see a popular account.

It sees a dead one.

The followers you bought are not people. They are bots, inactive accounts, or users with zero interest in your content, your product, or your existence.

They followed because someone paid for them to. And every time you post, the platform pushes your content to a percentage of your audience to test how it performs. That audience now includes thousands of accounts that engage with nothing.

The algorithm reads that silence as a signal that your content is not worth distributing further.

You paid money to shrink your own reach.

Now think about what this means if you are building a brand or running an actual business.

A serious brand asking for your analytics will see the gap between your follower count and your real engagement immediately.

You do not get the deal. You get quietly added to the list of accounts not worth working with.

A potential client who understands social media sees the same thing. Big number. Dead page. It does not read as successful. It reads as someone who needed to fake it.

And then there is the platform risk nobody talks about when they are selling you the package.

Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn and Facebook run regular purges of fake and inactive accounts.

When they clean house, your follower count drops publicly. The number goes down visibly. People notice. The credibility you were trying to manufacture disappears with the accounts you paid for, and now you have a smaller number and a reputation question to manage simultaneously.

The painful truth about pages that buy followers is this.

They are trying to look like they have arrived somewhere they have not been yet.

And that gap between the appearance and the reality is exactly what destroys trust when anyone looks closely enough.

Real growth is slower. Less exciting. Nobody is going to screenshot your follower count going from three thousand to three thousand and two hundred and post it as a win.

But those three thousand and two hundred real people who followed because they genuinely connected with what you put out will engage, refer, buy, and tell other people. They will do what no bought account ever will.

Show up.
Ten thousand real followers will always outperform a hundred thousand purchased ones.
Every single time.

Stop buying the shortcut that is quietly making everything harder.
Build the audience that actually shows up when you post.

Nobody is hiring adjectives anymore.

They are hiring evidence.
Results. Screenshots. Case studies. Links. Before and after transformations. Real work that real people paid real money for.

That is the new CV. And if you do not have one, it does not matter how beautifully you have described yourself in Times New Roman.

Think about what happens when a client or recruiter receives your application today. They read your name. They skim your summary. They see words like passionate, self-driven, results-oriented, team player, and detail-focused.

They have read those exact words four hundred times this week already. In the same order. Sometimes in the same font.

Then they close the tab.
Not because you are not talented. But because you gave them nothing to believe in.

You told them who you are without showing them what you do. And in 2026 telling is not enough. Showing is the only currency that moves people.

Here is the uncomfortable part.
The person who got the job or the client over you was not necessarily more qualified. They were more visible. They had a portfolio link that worked.

They had testimonials from real people who had real experiences with their work. They had a LinkedIn that showed thinking not just titles. They had something that answered the only question that actually matters.

Can this person deliver.

That question does not get answered by a list of skills in bullet points.

It gets answered by evidence that those skills produced something real in the world.

A virtual assistant who has testimonials from three past clients is more convincing than one who describes themselves as highly organized and proactive with excellent communication skills.

The adjectives are not lies. They might all be true.
But truth without proof is just a claim. And the market is not in the business of taking claims on faith.

Here is what you need to do.
Audit what you have to show right now. Not what you plan to build. What exists today that a stranger could look at and say this person knows what they are doing.

If the answer is nothing then that is your most urgent task. Not updating your CV.

Do sample projects. Volunteer for small jobs that let you produce real output. Document everything you work on. Screenshot results. Collect feedback in writing.

Build a simple portfolio page even if it only has three things on it.
Three real pieces of work will always outperform three pages of self-description.
Because the market has moved. It is not interested in who you say you are.

It is only interested in what you can prove.
Stop polishing the adjectives.
Start building the evidence.

Someone in a small town with bad internet and a second-hand laptop just got paid by a client in Canada.

Not someone who had everything figured out. Not someone who waited until conditions were perfect.

Not someone with a powerful network, expensive equipment, or a fancy office address that made them look credible on paper.

Someone who decided to start anyway.

And that decision is the entire story.
We have built a very comfortable relationship with our excuses. And I say comfortable because that is exactly what they are.

Comfortable. They feel reasonable. They feel justified. They even feel responsible sometimes because who starts something without the right tools and conditions?

The person in that small town. That is who.

Let me tell you what bad internet looks like in practice for someone building something real.

It means downloading tutorials at midnight when the network is less congested.

It means sending files in the early morning before everyone else wakes up and slows the connection down.

It means working offline as much as possible and syncing when the signal cooperates.

It means building systems around the limitation instead of stopping at the limitation.

That is not inspiration content. That is problem solving. Unglamorous, repetitive, daily problem solving that happens when someone decides the obstacle is not a reason to stop but a variable to work around.

And the second-hand laptop. You know what a second-hand laptop does that a brand new one does not?

Nothing different.

It opens the same software. It connects to the same internet. It sends the same emails. It produces the same work if the person using it knows what they are doing.

The tool was never the variable. The person was always the variable.

Here is the question that matters more than the excuse.

What did you do today that moved you closer to the thing you say you want?

Not what did you research. Not what did you save to read later. Not what did you discuss in a group chat full of people who are also not doing the thing yet.

What did you actually do.

Because the person in that small town was not more talented than you. They were not blessed with better circumstances. They were not lucky in any way that you are not.

They just stopped treating their situation as a reason and started treating it as a starting point.

There is a version of your story where two years from now you are the person someone else is talking about.

The one who started from unlikely conditions and built something real anyway. The one whose story makes someone else uncomfortable because it removes their last excuse.

That version does not require better internet.
It does not require a new laptop.
It does not require a different city or a different background or a different set of circumstances than the ones you are already sitting in.

It requires a decision made today that you stopped making yesterday.
The client in Canada did not care about the town. The bad internet. The second-hand machine.

They cared about the work.
And the work was done.
What is your excuse today.

What does the future of Africa look like when young people take ownership of AI, innovation, and problem solving?

The future of this continent is not going to be built by the smartest people in the room. It is going to be built by the most intentional ones.

The ones who decided to start before they felt ready.
The ones who used YouTube instead of waiting for expensive degrees.
The ones who chose skills over certificates.
The ones who built small before building big.
The ones who understood that Africa does not need more consumers. It needs more creators.

KENYA DOES NOT NEED MORE BUSINESSES.

It needs more business owners who can answer these five questions.

✅ What is your net profit margin this month?
Not revenue. Not sales. Not "things are moving."
What remained after every single cost was paid?

✅ What is your break-even point?
The exact number of sales, units, or clients you need before the business stops losing money and starts making it?
If you do not know this number, you do not know if today was a good day.

✅ What is your most profitable product or service?
Not your most popular one.
Not the one you enjoy providing most.
The one where the margin is highest and the cost is lowest.
Are you doubling down on it?
Or are you spreading yourself across ten things and excelling at none?

✅ What does your cash flow look like for the next 30 days?
Not your bank balance today.
The movement.
What is coming in, when, from whom.
What is going out, when, to whom.
A profitable business can die from cash flow problems.
It happens every week to businesses that never looked at the timing.

✅ How much are you actually paying yourself?
Not what you withdraw when there is pressure.
A structured, consistent amount that treats you as an employee of the business you own.
If the answer is whatever is left, the business does not have an owner.
It has a hostage.

Five questions.

Most business owners in Kenya cannot answer all five.
And this is not an insult.
It is a structural problem.

We celebrate starting.
We celebrate the certificate.
We celebrate the logo and the Instagram page and the launch.
We do not teach the language the business speaks after the launch.

That language is numbers.
And a business owner who cannot read that language is not running a business.

They are running on hope.
Hope is not a financial strategy.
It is what you use when you have run out of information.

Get the information.
Read your numbers.
Then run the business.
Because registering a company takes one afternoon at Huduma Centre.
Running one takes everything else.

EDUCATION WILL NOT PROTECT YOU FROM SCAMS.

I need you to understand why.

Not so you feel better about having been scammed.
Not so you feel worse about having warned someone who got scammed anyway.

So you understand the actual mechanism.
Because until you understand it correctly, you will keep applying the wrong defense.

The wrong defense is more information.

More red flag awareness.

More financial literacy seminars.

More documentaries about how Ponzi schemes work.

More articles shared in family WhatsApp groups with the caption "be careful."

All of this produces people who can explain exactly how they were scammed
while they were being scammed
and could not stop it.
Because information is stored in the rational brain.

And the rational brain is not in charge when a scam is operating correctly.

Here is what a scam feels like from the inside when it is working.

It feels like finally.

Finally an opportunity that matches the urgency of your situation.

Finally something that could close the gap between where you are and where you need to be.

Finally a person who understands what you have been going through and has something that addresses it specifically.

It does not feel like a scam.
It feels like relief with a deadline.
And the deadline is everything.

The deadline is not accidental.

It is the central technology of the fraud.

It creates a specific neurological state in which:

Your assessment of risk is suppressed.

Your desire for the outcome is amplified.

Your memory of every warning you have ever received is temporarily inaccessible.

Your capacity to ask uncomfortable questions feels like an obstacle rather than a protection.

In that state you are not you.

You are a version of you that has been engineered by someone who needed you to make a specific decision before your rational mind could intervene.

And that version of you makes the decision.

Then your rational mind returns.
Usually around the time the money has moved.

This is why educated people lose.

This is why people who have seen it before lose again.

This is why the person who forwarded the warning article is sometimes the next person to need one.
Because the knowledge was never the defense.

The only defense is a rule that exists before the urgency arrives.

A rule that does not require you to think clearly under pressure.
Because under pressure you will not think clearly.

Nobody does.

That is what pressure is for.

The rule is simple.

Any financial decision that arrives with urgency gets a mandatory pause of no less than 48 hours.

No exceptions.
Not for family.
Not for trusted friends.
Not for opportunities that will not be available tomorrow.
Especially not for those.
Because the urgency attached to a legitimate opportunity is almost always negotiable.

The urgency attached to a scam is always artificially fixed.

If the offer dies in 48 hours, it was never an offer.
It was a clock designed to stop you from thinking.

The pause is not indecision.
It is the only move they cannot counter.

Every other defense can be overcome.

Knowledge can be argued around.

Skepticism can be addressed with manufactured evidence.

Warnings can be reframed as jealousy or ignorance.
But the pause cannot be argued with.
Because the pause does not engage with the argument.
It simply waits.

And waiting is the one thing a scam cannot survive.
So the next time urgency arrives dressed as opportunity.

The next time the deadline is tonight and the decision needs to happen now.

The next time someone tells you that thinking about it means you are not serious.

Stop.
Not because you are unsure.
Because the urgency told you to.
And urgency in a financial context is not excitement.

It is a signal.
The signal says: someone needs you to decide before you think.
Do not give them that.
Think first.
Slowly.
After the deadline has passed.
After the pressure has lifted.
After the engineered feeling has subsided.
Then see what remains.

Sit with that.

Right now, in this moment, you are holding a device that can:

Record and edit professional content.

Learn any skill the market is currently paying for.
Accept payment from anywhere on the planet.
Build an audience that becomes a business.
All of it.

Without a laptop.
Without an office.
Without a single connection who can "hook you up."

And your most-used app is not Canva.
It is not LinkedIn.
It is not a skill platform.
It is the one that plays videos of people doing the things you told yourself you would do.

That is the most expensive habit you have.
Not because of data costs.
Because of what it is replacing.
Every hour spent consuming is an hour not spent producing.
The consumption feels like rest.
It is not rest.
It is the slow, comfortable surrender of the hours that could have changed your trajectory.

The person building a freelance income on their phone is not more talented.
They are not more connected.
They do not have better equipment.
They made one different decision.
They picked up the same device and asked a different question.
Not: what is there to watch?
But: what can I build with this?

That question costs nothing.
The answer to it compounds for years.
Your studio is charged.
Your storefront is open.
Your classroom has no waiting list.
The only thing missing is the decision to stop watching and start building.

Make it now.
Not tomorrow.
Now.

YOU ARE PROUD YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND TECHNOLOGY.

Let me tell you what that sentence sounds like to the market.

It sounds like: I have decided to stop being useful in the direction the world is moving.

Nothing more.
Nothing less.

You dress it up as personality.
"I'm more of a people person."
"I prefer face to face."
"These young people and their gadgets."

The market does not hear personality.
It hears unavailability.
And unavailability in a competitive environment is not a quirk.
It is disqualification.

Here is the specific damage being done right now
while that pride is being maintained.

Someone with your exact experience and half your years in the industry just automated the most time-consuming part of their workflow.

They now deliver faster, cheaper, and with more bandwidth for the work that actually requires human judgment.

You are competing against that person.
With older tools.
By choice.

A client who needs a proposal by tomorrow is not going to wait while you figure out how to use a document tool.
They are going to the person who already knows.

A business that could use your expertise is not going to train you on tools their team already uses daily.
They are going to hire the person who arrives ready.

An opportunity that lives on a platform you have never opened is going to expire before you decide to engage.
And it will go to the person who was already there.

This is not the future.
This is Tuesday.
Now here is the part that should make you genuinely uncomfortable.

The tools are not complicated.
That is not false encouragement.
It is an observable fact.

Canva was built so that people with zero design training could produce professional visuals.

ChatGPT responds to plain language.
You do not write code to use it.
You write sentences.
The same sentences you use to explain why you do not understand technology.

Zoom requires you to click a link.
Google Docs requires you to type.
LinkedIn requires you to exist on it.
None of this is engineering.
All of it is available.
Most of it is free.

The barrier is not the technology.
The barrier is the story you told yourself about the technology.

And that story — I am not a tech person — is the most expensive sentence in your vocabulary right now.
Because it is not describing a limitation.
It is describing a decision.

A decision to stay where you are comfortable while the market moves to where it needs to go.

Comfort and relevance are not the same destination.

They stopped being the same destination about ten years ago.
The market is not waiting for you to finish being proud.

It already moved.

The question is whether you are going to move too.

Or stay behind with a personality trait that nobody in your industry is paying for anymore.

You didn't lose your focus overnight.
You surrendered it.
Incrementally.

In exchange for entertainment that cost you nothing financially and everything cognitively.

Here is what actually happened.

Companies with billion-dollar engineering teams built products specifically designed to interrupt your train of thought every 90 seconds.

They ran A/B tests on which notification sound triggers the fastest response.

They studied the exact scroll speed that keeps your thumb moving.

They hired behavioral psychologists to design loops your brain cannot exit voluntarily.
And you called it "using your phone."

The outcome is measurable.

Sustained attention has collapsed across demographics.

The politician did not come from another planet.

He went to school in your neighbourhood. He sat in the same churches.

He was raised by parents who were part of the same community you belong to. He learned what was acceptable and what was rewarded by watching the same society you participate in every single day.

And that society taught him some very specific things.

It taught him that cutting corners is fine as long as you do not get caught.

That loyalty to tribe matters more than loyalty to principle.

That money fixes most problems, and silence fixes the rest. That the person who accumulates regardless of how, deserves respect. That accountability is for other people.

He did not invent those lessons. He inherited them. From us.

So, before the next rally where you perform outrage about corruption, answer these questions honestly.

You are sitting at home, degree on the wall, data running out, nobody calling. You do not need a pep talk. You need a plan.

Here it is.
DAYS 1 TO 30 — STOP. ASSESS. CLEAN UP.

Resist the urge to panic-apply everywhere. Sending 200 generic CVs is not strategy. It is noise that produces nothing except 200 silences.

Do three things instead.
✅Audit your skills honestly. Not your degree. Your skills. What can you actually do that someone would pay for today? If the list is short, that is your answer. That is what the next 90 days must fix.

✅Clean up your digital presence. Your LinkedIn headline should not say "recent graduate seeking opportunities." That is the most forgettable sentence on the internet. Tell people what you can do, not what you are looking for.

Both things can be true simultaneously. And confusing the two is why so many skilled people are still broke.

Two economies are running in parallel right now.

The first is the employment economy. Interviews, HR departments, shortlisting criteria, and job portals that filter your application before a human ever sees it. In this economy, yes — the certificate still carries weight. It gets you through the first gate. Nobody is disputing that.

But here is what that economy also comes with. Limited positions. Hundreds of applicants for every opening. Salaries decided by someone else.

A ceiling you did not set and cannot move. And the constant possibility that one restructuring meeting ends everything you spent years building inside someone else's company.

The second economy is the client economy. Freelancing. Contracts. Service businesses. Digital work. This economy does not have a gate. It has a question. One question.

Can you deliver?

"GO TO YOUR ROOM" IS NOT DISCIPLINE. IT IS A PARENT RUNNING AWAY FROM A CONVERSATION THEY DO NOT KNOW HOW TO HAVE.

We have confused removal with correction. Silence with resolution. Distance with consequence.

The child does something wrong. Tension rises. You feel the discomfort of having to explain, confront, and guide a human being who is watching your every move to understand how the world works.
And instead of doing that hard thing, you point at a door.
Go to your room.

The child goes. You breathe. Crisis over.

Except nothing was resolved. Nothing was explained. The child is not sitting in that room reflecting on their behaviour.

They are on their phone, staring at the ceiling, or building a quiet resentment they will one day express in ways that confuse you completely.

You did not correct them. You just separated yourself from the discomfort of correcting them. And those are two entirely different things.

Here is what "go to your room" communicates to a child.

When things get hard, we stop talking. When you disappoint me, I remove you rather than engage you.

I do not have the tools to explain why what you did was wrong, so I will just make you feel rejected and hope that the rejection teaches the lesson I cannot articulate.

It does not teach the lesson. It teaches rejection.
