In the early 1910s, Zhukovsky frequently visited the Ostrovki estate in Tver Province. By the late 19th century, the estate had fallen into decline—the heirs of the original owners, the Krassensky noble family, could no longer maintain the house and began renting it out.

For several years running, Zhukovsky rented accommodations there each summer, bringing relatives and students with him. He hunted, immersed himself in the countryside, and painted landscapes featuring the estate’s historic buildings.

Prince Gagarin was a true polymath—remembered fondly across a wide range of fields.

His early career included diplomatic service in several countries, such as Italy, where he studied under K. P. Bryullov. In 1841, the prince went to the Caucasus, joined the military, and eventually rose to the rank of major general. Alongside his military and administrative duties, Gagarin devoted significant time to art.

Despite lacking formal artistic training, he achieved a remarkably high level of skill. His rich and diverse body of work—earned him recognition as one of the most compelling artists of the 19th century—so much so that in 1859, he became Vice President of the Academy of Arts.
