Jackson Pollock became famous for producing art from splatters of paint. It's not uncommon to hear people viewing his art say: "my kids could do that".

But one must remember, at all times: art history is not the history of paintings, but the history of humans who painted.

With the growth of photography in the XIX century, art lost its goal of portraying reality. Add to this the tumults of countries, wars, the race to democracy, the liberalization of thoughts, ideologies, sexualities. Given all this, abstract art became a way for artists to create something new, to express the chaos and uncertainty of the modern world. From the XX century, in an unstoppable crescendo - to use a musical term -, artists distorted figures and lines, creating what today dominates the art world. Pollock's works are just one of the newest examples of this kind of paintings, because of what use could a perfect portrait be, when art lost its need for reality?

Who could be at the top of the ranking if not the genius of geniuses, Leonardo? There's actually still a dispute about the author of the masterpiece: Christie's claimed, after selling the artwork, that most scholars consider it to be an original work by Leonardo, but other believe he only contributed to certain elements. In this painting Jesus Christ is depicted with a typical renaissance dress, while he's making the sign of the cross with his right hand and holds a transparent, non-refracting crystal orb in his left, signaling his role as "Salvator Mundi" (Savior of the world) and representing the celestial sphere of the heavens. ⬇️

If the author is not totally sure, what's sure is that this is the most expensive painting in history, sold in 2017 to Badr bin Abdullah Al Saud, a Saudi Arabian entrepreneur and Minister of Culture, by Dmitry Rybolovlev, a russian oligarch known, other than for his wealth, for various scandals and financial crimes.

One of the oldest surviving Bibles could be yours...

...if you have $30 million.

One of the oldest surviving biblical manuscripts, a nearly complete 1,100-year-old Hebrew Bible, could soon be yours.
The Codex Sassoon, a leather-bound, handwritten parchment tome containing almost the entirety of the Hebrew Bible, is set to go on the block at Sotheby’s in New York in May. Its anticipated sale speaks to the still bullish market for art, antiquities and ancient manuscripts even in a worldwide bear economy.
Sotheby’s is drumming up interest in hopes of enticing institutions and collectors to bite. It has put the price tag at an eye-watering $30 million to $50 million. ⬇️

“There are three ancient Hebrew Bibles from this period,” said Yosef Ofer, a professor of Bible studies at Israel’s Bar Ilan University: the Codex Sassoon and Aleppo Codex from the 10th century, and the Leningrad Codex, from the early 11th century.

Only the Dead Sea Scrolls and a handful of fragmentary early medieval texts are older, and “an entire Hebrew Bible is relatively rare,” he said.

Willem de Kooning was one of the first artists of the abstract expressionism movement, the first American modern art movement. This massive painting (200,7 x 175,3 cms) was sold in 2015 by the David Geffen foundation to Kenneth C. Griffin.

The Codex Sassoon, the nearly complete 1,100-year-old Hebrew Bible we talked you about in April, has officially been sold for the record price of $38.1 million. This makes it the highest paid codex ever, surpassing the Da Vinci's Codex Leicester (we talked you about that one too, back in October) sold to Bill Gates in 1994.

The Codex Sassoon has been bought by Alfred H. Moses, a 93 years old former U. S. ambassador and president of the American Jewish Committee, who is giving it to the ANU-Museum of the Jewish People of Tel Aviv.

"The card players", Paul Cezanne, 1892/93

We get on the podium today with a masterpiece that is actually part of a series of paintings made by the french post-impressionist in the 1890's. Each version varies in size, number of players and setting, but they all share the leitmotiv of card players.
In this case there are only two men portrayed at a table playing cards, while a wine bottle sits between them.

The acquisition went down in 2011, when the State of Qatar bought the painting from George Embiricos, a greek shipping magnate and art collector.

At the time, this Cezanne was the highest paid painting ever.
