Li Tieguai (李铁拐), known as "Iron-Crutch Li," is one of the Eight Immortals of Taoist mythology. His name first appears in Ming dynasty compilations such as The Eight Immortals' Journey to the East and The Investiture of the Gods. His mortal name was Li Xuan, a devoted Taoist who attained immortality through the teachings of Laozi.

He is typically portrayed as an unkempt, lame beggar with an iron crutch and a large gourd slung over his shoulder. The gourd is his primary symbol, representing his mastery of medicine, alchemy, and magic. He is associated with healing, exorcism, and the power to expel evil spirits.

The central myth about Li Tieguai involves a journey of his spirit to Mount Hua. Before leaving, he instructed his disciple to guard his body for seven days. On the sixth day, the disciple received urgent news about his mother's illness and, believing Li would not return in time, cremated the body. Li's soul returned to find only ashes. He then entered the body of a lame beggar who had just died nearby. To help him walk, Laozi gave him an iron crutch, along with the gourd filled with magical medicines. This story highlights themes of fate and spiritual transformation.

Li Tieguai is known for his volatile temper but also his generosity toward the downtrodden. Among the Eight Immortals, he is considered the second oldest and often acts as a trickster figure. He interacts frequently with Lü Dongbin and Han Zhongli in folk tales.

In Chinese folk religion, Li Tieguai is worshipped as a patron of the sick and the poor. His statues are placed in temples and homes for protection and healing. Devotees offer incense and pray for his intercession in times of illness. His likeness appears on amulets and talismans believed to ward off evil.

In art, Li Tieguai is a favorite subject in Chinese painting and opera. He is often depicted with a drunken stagger, symbolizing his earthy connection to humanity. His story has been adapted in modern media and continues to inspire Taoist practitioners.

📝 Biography:
Houyi (后羿), known as the Great Archer in Chinese mythology, is legendary for shooting down nine of ten suns that scorched the Earth. Primary sources include the Huainanzi (2nd century BCE), Shan Hai Jing, later folklore, and textual variants from the Chu Li. Houyi served during the reign of Emperor Yao, a legendary ruler of ancient China. He possessed red eyes and extraordinary archery skills, wielding a red bow and white arrows gifted by celestial deities. His domains include archery mastery, heroic strength, and the preservation of civilization through superhuman feats.

His most famous myth depicts ten suns emerging simultaneously from the Fusang tree, scorching crops and killing countless people. Houyi slew nine suns while preserving one to maintain life. He also hunted down dangerous beasts, including a scorpion-like monster that terrorized the land. His wife Chang'e consumed his elixir of immortality and ascended to the moon, creating their tragic separation.

Versions differ on Houyi's ultimate fate: some accounts state he was killed by his disciple Peng Meng, while others suggest his immortality elixir led to his disappearance. Scholars debate whether Houyi conflates with an earlier archer deity who assisted Yu the Great in controlling floods before the Xia dynasty's founding.

His figure represents the archetypal hero who saves civilization through superhuman skill and self-sacrifice. Gong Gong is a destructive water deity attested in early Chinese mythic texts such as the *Shanhaijing* (Classic of Mountains and Rivers) and the *Huainanzi*. He is described as a massive, often reptilian or turtle‑like monster whose roar shatters the heavens, a motif that explains climatic chaos in pre‑imperial cosmology. In the *Shanhaijing* he lives at the northern edge of the world, where his fury causes floods that threaten the realm of both mortals and gods.

His primary symbols are water, thunder and the broken pillar of the sky; later sources link him to the broken pillar that once held the heavens up, a myth later rationalised as the cause of the "Great Flood". The *Book of Documents* (Shujing) records a king’s appeal to the supreme deity after Gong Gong’s floods destroyed crops, indicating an early cultic awareness of his destructive power.

Key myths portray Gong Gong battling the fire god Zhurong, a conflict that ends with Gong Gong striking the mountain of Mount Buzhou, cracking the pillar that supports the sky. The resulting tilt of the earth is said to have caused the uneven flow of rivers, aetiology for China’s varied terrain. In the *Classic of Poetry* a lament mentions “the roar of Gong Gong,” showing his presence in liturgical language.
