Australians Lost $122M in Crypto Assets to Scams Over the Past Year

Australian Federal Police (AFP) have reported that users in the country lost $122 million in digital assets due to scams in the last 12 months.

According to law enforcement, 47% of investment fraud cases were linked to the crypto sector. The majority of victims were under the age of 50.

AFP emphasized that these figures highlight the incorrect assumption that only older people fall victim to scams.

“Financial gain motivates most scammers. However, stolen funds may also be used to finance future criminal activities like money laundering, drug trafficking, or human exploitation,” stated AFP Assistant Commissioner Richard Chin.

Earlier, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) reported shutting down 7,300 phishing and fraudulent websites in the past year, with 615 of them related to crypto scams.

Kylian Mbappé's X Account Hacked to Promote Scam Token

Kylian Mbappé's X (formerly Twitter) account was hacked, promoting a fake token named MBAPPE. The fraudulent post was quickly deleted, but not before causing significant financial damage.

Scammers posted the contract for the token on the Solana network, which was launched on the platform http://pump.fun/. One unfortunate trader lost over $1 million after investing in the token, only to see its value plummet during a rug pull. However, another trader managed to make $200,000 by buying and selling the token at the right time.

Following the scam promotion, the hackers posted additional controversial messages expressing support for Palestine and making antisemitic remarks.

This incident echoes a similar hack earlier this year, where the account of the rock band Metallica was compromised to promote a scam.

Expert Claims Binance Freezes Palestinian Users' Funds at IDF's Request

Binance has reportedly frozen all funds belonging to Palestinian users at the request of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), according to Ray Youssef, CEO of P2P marketplace NoOnes.

Youssef stated that Binance has refused to return the funds and dismissed all appeals. He also shared a letter sent by Binance to affected users, citing Israeli law that allows the defense minister to seize assets linked to terrorist activities.

Youssef warned that similar actions could be taken against users in Lebanon and Syria, adding that former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao was jailed for refusing to comply with such demands.

Earlier reports from Bloomberg indicated that Binance plans to hire 1,000 employees by the end of 2024.
