Tether doubles down on gold

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said the company is preparing to become one of the world’s largest “gold central banks” amid a potential weakening of the US dollar’s role in the global financial system.

Tether already owns around 140 tons of gold worth more than $23 billion, stored in a secure vault in Switzerland, and continues to build its reserves by purchasing up to 1–2 tons per week.

The next step is active gold trading: Tether plans to profit from arbitrage opportunities and compete with banking giants, strengthening the link between stablecoins, real-world assets, and the emerging financial architecture of a post-dollar world.

The crypto market is still under heavy pressure with ongoing sharp declines. Bitcoin (BTC) plummeted to its lowest level since late 2024, touching around $60,000–$62,000 on Friday night (US time), before rebounding slightly to the $62,000–$70,000 range this morning. That's down nearly 15% in a single day and 28–38% since the start of the year, wiping out almost all gains from the past 16 months.

Ethereum (ETH) has also been hit hard, trading around $2,000–$2,100. The total crypto market cap has fallen to $2.3–2.4 trillion (losing about $2 trillion since its peak). The Crypto Fear & Greed Index hit 8, its lowest since June 2022 (post-Terra collapse), signaling extreme "Extreme Fear."

This drop is driven by global macro uncertainty, such as a strengthening USD, expectations of tighter Fed policy, tech stock selloffs (especially AI), and doubts over Trump's "crypto revolution" promises. Even though Trump was re-elected in 2024 with pro-crypto pledges, BTC prices are now lower than at the time of his election. Analysts say this is more about forced liquidations and panic selling than fundamental issues, but skepticism toward crypto as "digital gold" is growing.

SEC has concluded its investigation into Zcash

The U. S. Securities and Exchange Commission has closed a years-long investigation into the Zcash Foundation.

The organization was suspected of violations of U. S. securities laws.

The foundation received a subpoena from the regulator back in August 2023.

🇧🇷 Brazilian presidential hopeful wants a national Bitcoin reserve

Brazilian political activist and presidential candidate Renan Santos, founder of the Mission Party, says Brazil should create a strategic Bitcoin reserve, calling the idea “feasible” and pointing to El Salvador as an example.

Santos claims Bitcoin is already part of his election manifesto and believes blockchain can be used by the public sector to fight corruption and reduce embezzlement. He argues that more countries are moving toward BTC reserves and that Brazil shouldn’t be left behind.

Interest in Bitcoin at the state level is growing: Brazilian lawmakers previously held hearings on BTC reserves, and draft bills have proposed adding Bitcoin and other “secure” cryptocurrencies to the treasury.

With elections set for October 4, Santos positions himself as a “Brazilian Bukele,” pushing pro-Bitcoin, pro-sovereignty policies — while controversy continues to follow his bold views.
