In the blockchain universe, 2021 would most likely be known as the year when non-fungible tokens (NFTs) were introduced to the masses as the trading volume crossed $23 billion — 230X growth from just $100 million in 2020, according to a report. Thanks to multiple trends in NFT space including randomly generated collectibles, involvement of mainstream celebrities, and the rise of play-to-earn NFT games, digital images became a major investment bet for NFT lovers this year.

The top-selling NFT of 2021 was The First 5000 Days by the digital artist Beeple that was sold for $69.3 million. The digital image was essentially a giant collage of 5,000 images that Mike Winkelmann, known as Beeple, started creating on May 1, 2007. For the next 13-and-a-half years, he posted one picture every day online. Beeple’s latest NFT Human One was sold for $29 million in November this year and was the second top-selling NFT in 2021.

WazirX witnessed a record trading volume of over $43 billion in 2021, accounting for 1,735 percent growth from 2020. It also clocked a significant surge in user sign-ups, which crossed a user base of 10 million. WazirX conducted the survey to gauge the interest among its users in digital assets. It also analyzed the data patterns on its platform. Interestingly, women traded more in #Bitcoin, whereas men traded more in #Shiba Inu. About two-thirds of the platform users were below the age of 35.

New sign-ups increased by more than 1,000 percent among women, whereas 829 percent more men signed up than the previous year. On the NFT front, WazirX NFT Marketplace has enabled over 962 creators to mint 12,600 NFTs and sell over 5267 of them worth over 262,896 WRX Tokens, valued at around Rs 2.4 crore, in 2021 so far.

#RaghavendraRathore is using his work for a noble cause. The fashion designer has become the first designer to convert his artworks into NFT through the use of blockchain technology for art. The limited-edition NFTs are part of a collaboration with WazirX NFT Marketplace, Fashion Design Council of India, and #LakmeFashionWeek. He has also designed an NFT based on the Raghavendra Rathore Jodhpur brand, which will also be up for sale. A significant portion of profits from the venture will be utilized for the designer's non-profit organization.

Blockchain has become one of the world’s fastest-growing phenomena. Originally, it was solely used as the technology behind cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. Today, the blockchain has come a long way and is being put into many other uses like smart contracts and NFT games. NFT games in India have quickly gained widespread adoption in the gaming industry and show no signs of slowing down.

Unlike traditional games, blockchain games use NFTs to represent in-game items and collectibles that extend to the outside of the game’s universe. This means that multiple games can partner up and create a shared progress experience across their platforms. It also means, if a player chooses to quit the game, he or she can sell the in-game NFTs that they earned in exchange for cryptocurrency. This reason alone provides a rationale for why NFT games in India are becoming increasingly appealing.
