Trump Confirms Nomination of Paul Atkins for SEC Chair

Donald Trump has nominated Paul Atkins for the position of SEC Chair, as announced by the U. S. President-elect on his social media platform, Truth Social.

"He recognizes that digital assets and other innovations are critical to making America even greater," Trump wrote, listing Atkins' achievements.

The SEC is the main securities regulator in the U. S., which, under current Chair Gary Gensler, has repeatedly filed lawsuits and imposed multi-million-dollar fines on many representatives of the American crypto industry. During a speech at the Bitcoin 2024 crypto conference in Nashville this summer, Trump promised to "fire Gensler first thing" if he wins the election.

Previously, a CoinDesk source reported that Atkins might not be interested in restructuring the agency left behind by Gensler. This role is unattractive to him due to the extensive work required to transform the bloated agency, which he believes was poorly managed by the outgoing Gensler.

Atkins has also previously advised the Reserve Rights Foundation, the organization behind the RSR token. Its price surged by 30% following Trump's announcement.

"Bitcoin is the currency of freedom, a hedge against inflation for the American middle class, a means to strengthen the dollar as the global reserve currency, and an opportunity to eliminate the monstrous national debt," wrote Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on X. On November 15, Donald Trump nominated him for the position of U. S. Secretary of Health and Human Services. Previously, Kennedy was a rival of Trump in the presidential race.

While still a presidential candidate, Kennedy accepted campaign donations in bitcoin and spoke at cryptocurrency conferences, where he described bitcoin as a "symbol of democracy and freedom."

Kennedy has also been outspoken about the "war on cryptocurrencies" by Joe Biden's administration. He is a strong opponent of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), arguing that they pose a threat to privacy and individual freedom. He has promised to prevent the Federal Reserve from issuing a digital dollar. In April 2024, Kennedy proposed making the U. S. budget transparent using blockchain technology.

In the summer of 2023, Kennedy publicly announced that he had purchased 14 bitcoins — two for each of his seven children. Shortly before that, he disclosed owning cryptocurrencies worth "between $100,000 and $250,000."

Speaking at the Bitcoin 2024 conference in July, Kennedy, like Trump, stated his willingness to create a strategic reserve of bitcoins under Federal Reserve management. Furthermore, he declared that he would require the U. S. Treasury to purchase bitcoins daily until the reserve expanded to at least 4 million coins.
