🔊21 Countries on Fire: The War in the Middle East Has Already Affected Cyprus and 13 Other Countries in the Region
The conflict that began on February 28 has long since expanded beyond the borders of Iran and Israel. According to the latest data, 21 countries have been directly affected, 14 of them in the Eastern Mediterranean. In Cyprus, residents have already been evacuated from their homes. The numbers speak for themselves:
People:
• Iran — 1,444 dead, 19,324 wounded, 3.2 million internally displaced.
• Lebanon — 912 dead, 2,221 wounded, over 1 million displaced persons.
• In Lebanon, 5 hospitals have been destroyed, another 6 severely damaged, 44 primary care centers are non-operational.
• Approximately 120,400 people have already crossed from Lebanon into Syria, placing strain on an already weak infrastructure.
Energy and Economy:
• Brent crude oil prices have exceeded $110 per barrel. Every +10% in oil prices adds up to 0.4% to global inflation (IMF data).
• Due to strikes on refineries and storage facilities, toxins are released into the air, increasing the risk of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.
• Desalination plants have been destroyed — millions of people may be left without drinking water.
• The World Trade Organization forecasts global trade to fall from 4.6% in 2025 to 1.9% in 2026.
Healthcare Under Attack:
• Lebanon — 33 attacks on hospitals, 31 healthcare workers killed.
• Iran — 20 attacks, 9 killed.
• Palestine — 31 attacks on medical facilities since the beginning of the year.
• Iraq — 37 healthcare workers killed, hospitals are overwhelmed.
The scale of the conflict has already extended beyond the front lines. Fuel and food prices are rising across the world, while the most vulnerable countries in the region are losing healthcare systems and access to clean water. Cyprus finds itself at the epicenter of a humanitarian, energy, and economic tsunami, without even firing a shot.
