New data from the 2026 Economic Survey shows beef and matumbo prices continued rising in 2025, extending a steady upward trend that has seen the cost of some of Kenyaβs most commonly consumed meals increase sharply over the past five years.
The report also shows a major jump in sukuma wiki prices, piling more pressure on households and small eateries as traditionally affordable meals such as ugali, sukuma wiki and matumbo become increasingly expensive for many Kenyans.

Uganda has gained direct influence over the appointment of the next Kenya Pipeline Company Plc (KPC) managing director after the board formally opened recruitment for the position following the resignation of former chief executive Joe Sang, who stepped down weeks after the company listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange.
The new arrangement stems from governance changes introduced during KPCβs initial public offering (IPO), which granted Uganda, through the Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC), veto powers over the appointment or removal of the managing director as part of a deal tied to its multibillion-shilling investment in the petroleum logistics firm.
The concessions were negotiated after Uganda threatened to withdraw from the IPO over concerns about lack of influence in the management of a company that handles a large share of its fuel imports through Kenyaβs pipeline and storage infrastructure linking the Port of Mombasa to inland depots serving regional export markets.

One of Nairobiβs most prominent commercial properties, the 14 Riverside Drive complex, is set to be auctioned on May 26 following a prolonged legal dispute tied to a failed Ksh750 million property transaction.
The development, which houses the five-star Dusit D2 Nairobi hotel and several multinational offices, will go under the hammer at KTDA Plaza after court bailiffs moved to enforce a debt that has grown to nearly Ksh5 billion.
The dispute dates back to 2010 when a buyer paid Ksh750 million for two blocks within the development but never received the units. In 2015, arbitrator Ochieng Oduol ruled against the property owners and ordered a refund with 18 percent annual compound interest.
After years of litigation, the Supreme Court of Kenya dismissed the ownersβ final appeal in March 2026, clearing the way for enforcement of the arbitral award.

Authorities Hunt Suspected Extortion Ring Accused of Holding Co-op Bank Shareholder Payout Hostage
Authorities are pursuing a suspected extortion ring accused of attempting to derail the payment of about Sh14 billion to Co-operative Bank shareholders through what investigators and insiders describe as a series of questionable court cases filed in the name of Sacco officials and shareholders.
At the centre of the alleged scheme is a former senator from Nyamira, who is accused of moving in shortly after Co-op Bank notified shareholders of its proposed restructuring plan and the introduction of a holding company. According to people familiar with the matter, the former politician allegedly presented himself as acting on behalf of Sacco interests in Nyamira and Kisii, then prepared legal documents meant to frustrate the bankβs restructuring process.
The alleged plot reportedly began with demand letters and draft suits sent to the bank, followed by messages inviting bank representatives to βtalk.β Those familiar with the matter say the communication was interpreted as an attempt to pressure the bank into negotiations away from the formal shareholder and legal process.
The matter took a new twist after genuine cooperative movement leaders in Nyamira and Kisii reportedly became aware that their names and institutions were being linked to the cases. After questions were raised, the individuals behind the filings are said to have changed lawyers, altered the nature of the suits, and repackaged the dispute as a shareholder-led case.
Investigators are also said to be examining claims that signatures of Sacco officials were forged or misused to create the impression that cooperative societies from the two counties were backing multiple court actions. The suspected group is accused of demanding payment from the bank in exchange for withdrawing or stopping the cases.
For instance there is a Court case no E010 / 2026 Lodged all the way at Nyamira high Court and the parties are to appear before Lady Justice T. Cherere for directions on 14 th may 2026 for directions.
The biggest concern now is the risk posed to millions of farmers and ordinary shareholders who are expecting dividends from the bank. If the court cases succeed in delaying the restructuring or shareholder approval process, the Sh14 billion payout could be disrupted, leaving genuine investors caught in a fight they did not authorize and may not even understand.
Co-op Bank has a large shareholder base tied to the cooperative movement, meaning any attempt to block payments or weaponize court processes has consequences far beyond boardroom politics. For many farmers, Sacco members, and small shareholders, dividends are not abstract corporate figures. They are real money expected to support households, businesses, school fees, and rural livelihoods.
Police are now expected to establish who authorized the cases, whether the listed Sacco officials genuinely approved them, whether signatures were forged, and whether the legal process was being abused to force a private settlement from the bank.

Rising tomato and onion prices are piling pressure on household budgets across Kenya, with consumers in Nairobi and other urban areas cutting food portions, reducing purchases and changing shopping habits as the cost of essential cooking ingredients continues to surge.
Traders say wholesale tomato prices have more than doubled in recent weeks while onion prices have also risen sharply, pushing up the cost of basic meals and straining both households and small-scale food vendors across several markets.

Treasury Introduces New eCitizen Charges in Major Fee Review
The National Treasury has introduced a new fee structure for services offered through the eCitizen platform, with some transactions now attracting convenience charges of up to Ksh100.
The changes are contained in the Public Finance Management Regulations, 2026, proposed by Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi. The new structure replaces the flat KSh 50 fee previously charged across services.
Under the revised model, services costing above Ksh100,000, including land transactions and stamp duty payments, will attract a Ksh100 fee. Services valued between Ksh10,000 and Ksh99,999 will incur a Ksh70 charge, while those ranging from Ksh500 to Ksh9,999 will continue attracting Ksh50.
Basic services costing below Ksh100 will remain free or attract minimal charges. Auditor General Nancy Gathungu has raised concerns over the revised fee structure.

The United States government has identified Kenya among countries heavily affected by the growing trade in counterfeit products, according to the 2026 Special 301 Report released by the U. S. Trade Department under President Donald Trump administration.
The report lists fake medicines, electronics, semiconductors, vehicle parts, clothes, food products and household goods among counterfeit items flooding markets globally, including Kenya. Most of the products reportedly originate from countries such as China, Singapore, Peru and the United Arab Emirates.
Kenya was listed alongside Brazil, Mexico and Nigeria as markets with weak intellectual property enforcement systems.
The report also warned that counterfeit pharmaceutical products pose a major risk to consumers, especially in low and middle income countries, with online platforms increasingly being used to distribute fake drugs.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja had been in City Hall on Monday evening when a team of police officers arrived to execute an arrest order issued by the Senate County Public Accounts Committee (PAC) for contempt of Parliament, prompting a tense standoff that ended with the governor slipping out through a back exit while officers approached the main entrance.
The arrest order followed a Ksh 500,000 fine and a directive from the committee, which had found Sakaja guilty of failing to honour multiple summonses aimed at compelling him to explain the utilization of billions of shillings allocated to Nairobi City County, including funds for personnel costs, solid waste collection, and operational expenditures.

Kenya Railways has addressed growing concerns over an alleged SGR Ticket Shortage ahead of the Easter holidays, firmly denying claims of malpractice in its Madaraka Express booking system. The corporation insists its digital ticketing platform is designed to ensure fairness, transparency, and equal access for all passengers.
The response follows accusations on social media suggesting staff were hoarding tickets and reselling them at inflated prices due to high demand. The claims sparked fears among travellers planning to use the popular NairobiβMombasa route.
However, Kenya Railways maintains that ticket sales are fully structured and automated, limiting human interference. Passengers can book tickets up to 60 days in advance via the official website, USSD (*639#), or at SGR stations.
With demand expected to surge during the holiday, the corporation has reassured the public that the system remains accountable and accessible, urging passengers to use official channels when booking tickets.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is currently being sought by police, with Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud confirming efforts to effect his arrest.
The move follows an order from a Senate watchdog committee directing the arrest of the governor for contempt of Parliament.
The directive came from the County Public Accounts Committee, which instructed Inspector-General of Police (IG) Douglas Kanja to take the county boss into custody and present him before the committee.
While speaking to the media on Monday evening, Commander Mohamud stated that officers had been searching for Governor Sakaja throughout the day in order to implement the Senateβs order, but had been unable to locate him.
This development comes amid growing scrutiny of county governors, with some lawmakers indicating that officials found in contempt or failing to cooperate with parliamentary oversight could be declared unfit to hold public office.

Concerns over the Kenya Scouts Association (KSA) have intensified, with sources alleging that Chief Commissioner Victor Radido has concentrated power by holding multiple key roles, manipulating grassroots elections, amending the constitution to favor himself and allies, and diverting focus from youth programs despite substantial government funding.
Insiders argue that these actions, together with political interference and ownership of enterprises contrary to scouting values, threaten the integrity of KSA and undermine the development and welfare of millions of young Kenyans under the movementβs care.

The Standard on Monday hits out at the judiciary, laying bare a recurring pattern in which judicial officers repeatedly use court orders to stall investigations and halt proceedings, exposing a system where the pursuit of justice for ordinary Kenyans is obstructed at every turn.
A Garissa court ruling in a contested property dispute has sparked controversy after records from the National Registration Bureau confirmed that the identity card used in the case belongs to a different person, even as the claimant secured victory in court.
The decision, which appears to contradict official verification communicated to investigators in February 2022, has left the affected party at risk of losing property and triggered fresh questions about the handling of evidence presented during the proceedings.

The High Court of Kenya in Embu has ordered a partial recount of votes in the Mbeere North by-election after identifying irregularities in several polling stations.
Justice Richard Mwongo directed that ballot materials from selected stations be re-examined following gaps in election records. The petition was filed by Newton Kariuki Ndwiga, who is challenging the results announced by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
The election was won by Leonard Wamuthende Njeru of the United Democratic Alliance.
The court flagged a ballot box with unexplained materials, violence at Kaungu polling station, and possible alterations to Forms 35A in eight stations. Fifteen ballot boxes will be scrutinised, with a report due by April 17 before final submissions on April 22.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Renson Ingonga, has accused Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja of delaying the submission of investigation files into the South C building collapse, nearly three months after the tragedy claimed two lives on January 2, 2026.
In a letter dated March 27, 2026, marked βvery urgent,β Ingonga expressed frustration over inaction by the National Police Service despite multiple directives from his office. The first instruction, issued on January 4, 2026, required police to conduct a thorough investigation, record statements from the developer, contractor, Nairobi City County building approval officials, and county compliance officers, and submit the findings within seven days.
A follow-up letter on February 9 reiterated the urgency after no files were received, with a three-day deadline for submission. More than a month later, Ingonga said there was still no response, prompting a fresh ultimatum demanding the files within three days.

The newly appointed Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) Director-General, Luka Kimeli, is facing mounting scrutiny over allegations linking his office to the questionable award of a multi-million shilling tender to a Somali contractor.
The claims, emerging shortly after his confirmation, have sparked concerns about potential abuse of office and possible breaches of public procurement laws. According to the allegations, the deal was allegedly coordinated from the Director-Generalβs office, with the involvement of procurement officials suspected of working in collusion with contractors for kickbacks.
If proven, the arrangement could point to a deliberate scheme that denied taxpayers value for money and potentially led to the loss of public fundsβan issue that continues to plague major infrastructure projects.
Equally troubling are claims that regulatory bodies have yet to take decisive action despite the seriousness of the allegations.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has removed Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi as deputy party leader following a tense Special Delegates Conference held at Jamhuri ASK Grounds in Nairobi.
Delegates rejected Osotsiβs position on procedural grounds after he reportedly failed to secure a proposer and seconder during the endorsement process. Party chairperson Gladys Wanga confirmed that the matter of his replacement has now been forwarded to the National Executive Committee (NEC) for determination.
The fallout comes amid deepening internal divisions, with Osotsiβs Linda Mwananchi faction holding a parallel convention at Ufungamano House under heavy police watch. Despite earlier attempts to disrupt the meeting, the faction proceeded with its gathering.
At the main ODM conference, key leaders defended the party against what they termed a βhostile takeover.β
The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has been given the green light to revoke six broadcasting licences owned by Standard Media Group over unpaid fees amounting to Ksh48.9 million.
In a ruling on March 27, the Communications and Multimedia Appeals Tribunal dismissed the media houseβs appeal, affirming that the revocation process is lawful under the Kenya Information and Communications Act (KICA).
The affected outlets include Radio Maisha, Spice FM, Vybez Radio, Berur FM, KTN Burudani, and KTN News. The tribunal cited persistent failure to settle licence fees and the Universal Service Fund levy despite repeated notices and extensions.
Although the media group acknowledged the debt and proposed a payment plan, the tribunal ruled that regulatory obligations are binding, effectively paving the way for licence cancellations.
