Cool weather planting tips. As soon as the soil is drained and workable, you can plant: radishes, carrots, lettuce, spinach, cabbage family, onions, potatotes, kolhrabi, turnips and many herbs like dill, rosemary, oregano and thyme (NOT basil). Although arugula and cilantro tolerate cool temps, I wait until a week or two before the solstice (June 20ish) to plant them so they don't go to seed at the solstice. I plant Asian cabbage in the fall for the same reason. I plant my garlic in October, so it's already up and I just fertilized it. What cool season veggies did I miss and what do you love to get started early?

Fish to Eat!! Salmon and the Cod family (cod, pollock, haddock) are great options to incorporate into your weekly meal plans.
Salmon Varieties
Sockeye is rich in Omega 3s and nutrients and has rich deep color. Due to its high fat content, it does tend to have slightly higher amounts of fat-soluble toxins, but is still consider quite clean.
Pink Salmon is VERY young and therefore one of the cleanest Salmon, but tends to be drier as it has less fat.
Chum (Keta) Salmon is also very clean, but less Omega 3s and other nutrients.
Coho is somewhere in the middle of the Pink/Keta and the Sockeye Salmon.
King (Chinook) Salmon is very rich in Omega 3s and nutrients BUT is is larger and contains concerning amounts of fat-soluble toxins, so should be avoided or limited.
Atlantic Salmon is almost always farmed and has higher levels of fat-soluble toxins than most other types and ALSO LESS Omega 3s and other key nutrients, so its NOT a good option. When eating out, farmed Trout is a better option, if available.

Fish to Avoid of Severly Limit: Fish that are most contaminated with mercury are large predatory fish such as:
Swordfish
Shark
King Mackerel
Tilefish
Fish to only Eat Very Occasionaly: These fish are large and tend to bioaccumulate mercury and other toxins, though not to the degree of those listed above.
Tuna (albacore)
Halibut
Grouper
Sea Bass
Freshwater fish from the Great Lakes. These fish are fatty and acumulate the toxins that are known to plague the Great Lakes due to industry.
Sockeye Salmon
Walleye
Bass
Finally, Atlantic Salmon is a farmed fish that is known to be lower in nutrients and high in PCB's and toxins. They also tend to be less clean, due to being grown in confined areas with lots of fish food and other salmon. The quality and cleaness will vary according to where they were farmed, which the consumer rarely knows. This is the most common salmon served in restaurants. Farmed Trout is a cleaner, better option.
