That was me while setting up an account with the electricity provider over the phone. The agent on the other end of the line happened to be a … Scottish woman.

Have you ever wondered why recognizing unfamiliar accents can be so difficult?

A big part of the answer lies in what linguists call the phonological “sieve”, or filter. As adults, we perceive sounds through the system of our native language. For example, an American English speaker clearly distinguishes between the vowels /uː/ and /ʊ/ (as in pool vs. pull), while for many Slavic-language speakers these may sound like the same vowel /у/, because their vowel system doesn’t make that distinction.

In other words, your brain filters everything it hears through the sounds it already knows.

When you learn how sounds are actually articulated, how reductions work, and how speech links together at natural speed, you expand that perceptual filter. Your brain becomes better prepared to recognize new sounds instead of rejecting them.

Friends, I just got back from China 🇨🇳

The greatest thing about the trip was this feeling — the one every non-native speaker knows:

You say a sentence in a foreign language and … someone understands you. Exactly the way you wanted to be understood

💡I’ve been actively learning Chinese for three months. And the first time I said something simple outside of class — to a hotel worker — and she just got it… that was everything. You know that feeling better than anyone.

And just before I packed my bags, Toastmasters handed me another Best Speaker award 🏆 — the fourth one now.

🔥 These two things happening side by side switched something in me. I want to give you more.

Pronunciation stays — but from now on, it’s part of something bigger. I want to help you become a better speaker overall. Someone who is listened to and understood. Someone who speaks and actually feels like the best version of themselves.

Watch this to make sure your “spreadsheet” doesn’t turn into “spread shit” 😭

💡The best hack here is to “add” a brief /j/ after the /i:/ vowel as in “sheet”. This will help you keep your tongue position high as needed for the /i:/

So, should English teachers have a native-like pronunciation? Here’s what I think.

Roses are red, violets are blue, and the two skills that matter more than anything in a foreign language teacher are:

⭐️ top-tier methodological skills;

⭐️ a high command of soft skills: basic empathy, emotional regulation, flexibility, and an understanding of how people actually learn

That’s it. These two form the foundation of real professionalism.

Now, where does natural, native-like pronunciation fit into this skills matrix?

Imagine two teachers. Both have excellent methodology and strong psychological skills. One speaks with a decent American accent. The other—alas—hated phonetics classes in college speaks with a noticeable Slavic accent.

Which one is MORE likely

- to find more students seeing that most of us still “judge the book by its cover”?

- to attract C1 learners, including teachers learning from teachers?

- to diversify their income by taking on niche requests like accent coaching or advanced listening skills?

A native-like accent isn’t a must, but it IS a powerful asset—one a teacher can actively use.

So no, I don’t think we can honestly say pronunciation doesn’t matter in this profession. People who say that either had traumatic phonetics classes in the past (a cork in your mouth, really? chanting “Peter Piper picked…”—seriously?) or never truly engaged with pronunciation work at all.

What do you think?

If an English teacher posts a video of themselves speaking English, and the video goes viral, the comment section almost always inevitably turns into, well, a portal to hell 🔥

The opinions normally range from «Ну и акцент» to «отстаньте от нее, только русские гнобят русских за акцент».

Where do you stand in this debate? Do you think English teachers should speak with a native-like pronunciation (🇺🇸 or 🇬🇧)?

📝 Next time you have to calm down your nerves …

First up, thanks for your reactions and warm words — this a lot to me!

As promised, I’ll share a super easy tip that I tested out for the first time, and it really helped me get out of my head and not let the nerves get the better of me.

⛔️⛔️⛔️ Starting out with what did NOT work:

❌ Deep breathing. It actually made me more anxious: after several deep breaths, I got so sensitive to what was happening in my body that I started feeling my heart POUNDING in my chest. No way.

❌ This one is a HUGE no-no for me. Reviewing your notes / points / script anywhere within a 30 min window before your speech. This just makes you more self-conscious and anxious about forgetting to say something. It’s like recapping all your «билеты» right before you enter the exam room. All the rehearsal has to be done well before the speech day, however rigorous you want it to be.

🥵 Phew. I can finally breathe out with relief.

Two weeks ago, I signed up for a storytelling contest in my public speaking club in London. Not because I was burning with desire, but because I had to:

▪️I need a certain number of speeches to qualify for regionals, and eventually, the world contests.

▪️I’d never done a true storytelling, so there were a couple of unlocked skills for me there

🔥 So I went all in: studied great storytelling techniques, noticed everything, drafted my speech, and rehearsed like there was no tomorrow.

🥈Long story short- it worked. I took second place, just a hair away from first.

But honestly, the result wasn’t even the best part. The level of speeches was so high that I walked away with a notebook full of insights and ideas I’m excited to test now.

😍😍😍

And guys!! Right before going on stage, I accidentally discovered a brilliant way to calm my nerves. The kind you can use before any conversation, presentation, or moment that makes your heart race.
