The State you Wake Up in

ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb said :

حدثنا الحسين قال : حدثنا عبد الله قال : حدثنا علي بن الجعد، قال : أخبرنا ابن عيينة، عن أبي السوداء، عن أبي مجلز لاحق بن حميد قال : قال عمر بن الخطاب : ما أبالي على أي حال أصبحت على ما أحب أو على ما أكره، لأني لا أدري، الخير فيما أحب أو فيما أكره؟

I do not care about which state I wake up in; if it is in accordance with what I love or in accordance with what I hate, because I do not know: is goodness lies in what I love or in what I hate?

The Baby that Wrapped His Arms around my Leg

During the Friday Prayer, I placed a water bottle in front of me before starting the prayer. A man brought his small baby with him to the prayer, and stood beside me, placing his child in front of him.

The baby took my water bottle immediately and would suckle on the lid, confused as to why he wasn’t able to drink the water.

When the Imām got to the end of Sūrah Fatihah during the Second Unit of the Prayer, we all said Amīn. The loud noise startled the baby and he cried loudly.

The baby cried and wrapped his arms around my left leg looking up at me as he cried, and after ≈20 seconds the baby wrapped his arms around his father’s legs and cried.

The Imām noticed the crying and shortened the prayer, as per the Ḥadīth of the Prophet (ﷺ) on shortening the prayer when hearing the cry of an infant. When the prayer concluded, the Imām reminded the people not to get angry at such incidents and taught them the Ḥadīth in a beautiful manner.

Nevertheless, what struck me was the thought of the children in Palestine and else where, the muslims who are oppressed. The crying infants who cry because of the bombs dropped on them and the terror they face, who have no one to wrap their arms around to cry to.

May Allāh grant them ease and a way out.

Management of Your Affairs

Imām Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمه الله) said :

وأن تدبيره لعبده خير من تدبير العبد لنفسه وأنه أعلم بمصلحته من العبد وأقدر على جلبها وتحصيلها منه وأنصح للعبد منه لنفسه وأرحم منه بنفسه وأبر به منه بنفسه وعلم مع ذلك أنه لا يستطيع أن يتقدم بين يدي تدبيره خطوة واحدة ولا يتأخر عن تدبيره له خطوة واحدة

His [Allāh’s] management of His servant’s affairs is better than the servant’s management for himself, that He knows what benefits His servant better than the servant does, that He is more capable of bringing it about and achieving it, more sincere to the servant than the servant is to himself, more merciful to him than he is to himself, and more devoted to him than he is to himself.

He [the servant] also knows that he cannot advance a single step ahead of Allah’s decree and management, nor can he delay a single step behind it.

وإن أبى إلا تدبيره لنفسه واختياره لها واهتمامه بحظه دون حق ربه خلاه وما اختاره وولاه ما تولى فحضره الهم والغم والحزن والنكد والخوف والتعب وكسف البال وسوء الحال فلا قلب

However, if he [the servant] insists on managing his own affairs, choosing for himself, and focusing on his personal interests rather than his Lord’s rights, Allāh leaves him to what he has chosen and lets him handle what he has taken on.

Consequently, he is overtaken by worry, sorrow, grief, distress, fear, fatigue, a troubled heart, and a miserable condition.

There is no peace for such a heart.
